Although Autumn is my favorite season, I hate letting go of Summer, so the arrival of Fall is bittersweet for me. Fall brings with it a rich range of colors but I thought for the end of summer, a neutral tablescape would be the perfect choice.
I started with a strip of dropcloth and added a ribbon of jute webbing down the middle for a runner.
I found large, hollow gourds at a recent flea market for just $5 each.
I thought they’d look cute perched atop this big slice of tree trunk I found at a yard sale for one dollar.
I added some decorative eggs I had around the house.
A simple setting for four using mismatched white dishes keeps the tablescape neutral.
Burlap bows were tied around the side chairs to add a bit of whimsy.
Wooden end chairs were brought in to pick up the golden tone of the gourds.
I love these big ole gourds and wished I’d bought more.
To create the candles, I simply filled mason jars halfway with pinto beans and nestled a votive in the middle.
The top of the jar wears a simple burlap ribbon secured with a twine bow.
Each place setting has a script tissue paper flower tucked in a vase.
Inside the vase is shredded paper and another twine bow wraps around the outside.
Silver plate Oneida was discovered at the flea market for $30 for the set.
And the place mats? They’re my favorite part of the tablescape.
I simply glued 6 book pages together using a glue stick. This is a great craft for kids since it’s so easy.
After dinner, simply toss the book pages in the garbage. No need to wash soiled place mats.
And that’s my simple and economical end-of-Summer, beginning-of Fall tablescape.

Wow, this is incredible! Talk about “simple elegance;” this has it all. I love everything about it from the huge gourds, to the mason jar candles, to the book page placemats! What a talented lady you are, Jennifer!
Love this, I have a question… I notice in these photos
the head chairs are smaller wooden ones. How have
the Windsors you painted ascp graphite holding up?
I am considering painting mine graphite and waxing
and would like to know how “distressed” they have
become over the months since you painted them?
Did you ever consider putting a polycrylic instead of
wax? Thanks for any feedback. Cheers
I like this because I cannot go smack dab from Summer Into Fall either
It’s a transition from late summer to early fall …
I can’t decorate with pumpkins and cornstalks until they are really ready and out there…:) Rushing it all seems strange to me / i usually do a gradual transition too
Such a beautiful table! I love the simplicity and the “natural” details. The gourds are amazing! I would love to find some of those! Life to the full, Melissa @ DaisyMaeBelle
Love this. New follower. I will be back for more inspiration.
