Christmas Came Early with Changes in the Dining Room

Christmas came early for me this year! My new pedestal dining table and chairs were delivered the week after Thanksgiving. I gave my large table (extends up to 11 feet) and chairs to my daughter for her new home and found a smaller table so I could move my dining space back to the sitting room. The room still needs some work but I thought I’d share the furniture, along with my new everyday dishes that I love. (This post contains affiliate links – see my privacy policy.)

The Owen pedestal table is from Pottery Barn, and the cross back Cadence chairs are from Arhaus. The chairs weren’t my first choice. I wanted these black Shay chairs, also from Pottery Barn, but they wouldn’t be delivered until end of February.

I didn’t want to wait until late February for dining chairs, and I’ve always loved cross back chairs so I’m happy with my second choice. In fact, I think I like the Cadence chairs with the table better than I would’ve liked the Shay chairs. You get a peek of my Christmas tree in this photo. I’m sharing it next week. But for now, let’s talk about the new dishes which are appealing for several reasons.

I’ve been on the hunt for high quality, everyday dishes that are both pretty and affordable. I’ve found plenty of attractive options, but the price tag was more than I wanted to spend. I think it was a Facebook ad that introduced me to Mora Ceramics which is owned by a husband and wife team. “Mora” is the Latin word for “slow down” – I like their philosophical approach and think it’s so relevant in today’s busy world.

Below you see the soup/cereal bowls, dinner plates, and adorable ramekins. I chose the flat, rimmed dinner plates because I like the rims on them. There are other dinner plate options from which to choose.

But what first caught my eye in the collection are the flat pasta bowls with clay bottoms (upper right corner of photo below). These have a deeper rim than the plates and are great for serving salad or pasta. I chose the assorted colors set, but you can get them all in the same color, too. They nest nicely inside the plates.

The dishes have a speckled application that makes them even more interesting. But what’s most appealing is the price point. A set of six dinner plates is less than $60. I recently gave away both of my China sets and wanted to find dishes that aren’t too fancy for every day, but still make an impression for larger gatherings.

I’m really glad to move my dining room back where it was originally intended to be. I liked my former table and chairs that is perfect for our growing family, but it’s time for someone else to take the reins in hosting holiday meals. We go to Galena for Christmas so no one needs to host that holiday meal in their home. So that just leaves Thanksgiving, really. I decided to put my house back how I wanted instead of catering its layout to one day of the year.

I’m so happy with the Owen pedestal table and the cross back Cadence chairs. The table is round, unless you add the leaf which makes it oval-shaped with room for more seating. Even when extended, it still fits nicely in this space. Now I just need to figure out what to do with the living room that used to be the dining room. Sigh. Homes are ever-evolving with life’s continual changes!

I’m now on the hunt for everyday glasses, a new light fixture, and a sideboard (or similar) for under the landscape painting. The chest that’s currently there is only temporary – I need something a bit longer and shallower in depth. I might swap out the rug, too. Time will tell!

  1. Wow! I agree with you, the chairs you ordered are perfect with the table. Your “new” dining room is really coming together!

  2. The new look is sooo you! The dishes remind me of the earthen ware pottery so popular in the mid to late 70s. One of the Denby patterns was our everyday dishes. One of the few things that we didn’t “need” but kept in our downsizing.
With the moving of your dining room, I’m still trying to figure out the floor plan
layout of your awesome home. I’m a broken record- can you give us a floor plan in one of your posts? 😉

  3. Good choice on the chairs and they will serve their purpose. Love the little Norfolk pine on the table, nice touch.

  5. Your “new” dining room is so nice. Love the table and chairs. I have wondered about buying chairs online though. I worry about comfort and imagining if they’re the right size!! Love the rug with the furniture too. It all looks cozy and pretty.

  6. Wonderful new dishes! Enjoyed the story about the makers. Anything from Pottery barn is always well made and your table looks great in it’s home spot. I like to wander around Pottery Barn and just make my wish list:0)
