European Country Homes, a Red Fox + More: Friday Finds

Gardening season is in full swing and I’m pretty happy about the way my yard is looking. Except for the dahlias in the whisky barrels. Something has been eating them, and it’s not bugs. Something is chewing them from the top down. We live near a forest preserve and I thought maybe a deer had wandered into our yard. But no. Yesterday I woke up to find a red fox at the foot of my porch steps. He ran off toward the preserve when he saw me. My neighbor was out and told me he had seen the fox eating the dahlias earlier in the week! I would’ve never guessed a fox was the culprit. But let’s move on to Friday Finds while I figure out how to save my dahlias.

European country home and garden

Let’s start today with this gorgeous Victorian country home in Surrey Hills that has a beautiful kitchen by deVol. The ceiling is one of the most amazing I’ve ever seen in a house.

Equally charming but on a much smaller scale is this adorable Swedish cottage which also has a vaulted ceiling, but to a lesser degree.

Speaking of small-scale, check out these small entryway ideas to help you give a fresh look to the entrance of your home.

Don’t miss the chance to see designer Marianne Brown’s home. She enjoys creating layered, lived-in looks that have become extremely popular today. In addition to the tour, you can read the interview about her design story.

I was happy to stumble upon this article about unfitted kitchens, which is my preferred style of kitchen. Nicki at Cottonwood (located in New Zealand) even has a Pinterest board for unfitted kitchens.

Finally, let’s wrap up this week’s finds with this amazing, layered Strawberry Shortcake Cake recipe that’s made from scratch. Perfect for a warm day!

Enjoy your weekend. Hubby and I might head to the city (Chicago) for some fun on Sunday.

  1. Love the unfitted kitchens. Was unaware of that term, but, if I weren’t renting an apartment, this would be the way I’d go. I think most kitchens in rentals are “unfit,” not “unfitted”!

  2. I love the unfitted kitchen and wish I had one, love the look. That kitchen from Sweden appealed to me much better than the first.

  3. Love fitted kitchens! And I want that piece of green kitchen furniture with the wonderfully worn drawers in the first photo of the “Rise of the Unfitted Kitchen” article. Have fun downtown.

  4. Thanks these were so fun. I always like the way Europeans decorate and also liked the unfitted kitchens. Have fun in Chicago!
