My Favorite Tips for Living a Healthy Life

I’m excited to share with you a post today that’s all about staying confident even when you’re battling a cold sore.  If you suffer from cold sores like I do, you know it isn’t easy to feel confident when you get one.  With the first sign of a cold sore coming on I reach for Abreva® to get rid of it fast.  Then I follow the following simple tips to help keep my confidence high!

When it comes to health and staying fit, I prefer to take preventative measures and choose to exercise regularly and get plenty of rest. Some of you know that I’m a runner but you may not know that I’ve been exercising regularly for most of my adult life. Several years ago I managed a fitness club, taught aerobic classes, and acted as a personal trainer. The knowledge and tips I gained during those years keep me active and healthy.

The morning of the Fox Valley marathon in St. Charles, IllinoisMy favorite form of exercise is running because you don’t need a lot of equipment and you get to enjoy the outdoors. Here I am (in the orange sweatshirt) with some of my running friends a few years ago, the morning of the Fox Valley Marathon in St. Charles, Illinois. A marathon is 26.2 miles and this race was special to me because it was the first time I ran a marathon in less than 4 hours! My finish time was 3:58 and I burst into tears when I crossed the finish line because I was thrilled I finally broke that 4 hour barrier.

Great Western Trail at Leroy Oakes Forest PreserveThis is the trail where I do most of my long distance running. Training for a marathon is hard yet extremely rewarding work. You have to be smart about it too, gradually increasing your training distance and making sure you eat right. This is true of any fitness routine. Although it’s tough, there are so many rewards. As you conquer the miles, you build your self confidence at the same time. So when you face other challenges in your life, you draw upon the strength you built from running all those miles (or from whatever fitness activity you perform – it doesn’t have to be running).

When your legs are tired your brain keeps telling you to stop and walk… or to turn around and go home. When this happens to me, I start telling myself I’m an athlete and athletes don’t quit. I think about others who have faced physical challenges and overcome them. It keeps me going. Maybe running doesn’t appeal to you… but any type of physical activity is good. Try to get at least 30 minutes of exercise per day to keep you feeling your best. Even a brisk walk is good for your body and your soul. It’ll clear any cobwebs in your head. Start small, and increase the duration of activity. So maybe start with walking for 10 minutes at a time. The following week, bump it up to 15 minutes, and so on. The key is to increase your activity gradually so you don’t get injured.

Kane County Country RoadHere’s one of my favorite country gravel roads to run on. There’s something regenerative about starting your day outside in the fresh air with physical activity. For me, I try to run 5 mornings a week. It’s a positive start to the day and gives me sustained energy. It’s like an investment in your future and your health too. I’ve had the good fortune to be healthy most of my life, and I don’t take that for granted. But on occasion when I do get sick, I have a few go-to products.

At the first tingling of a cold sore, I always reach for my Abreva® because I know it works, and it works quickly. It’s best if you catch it at the very first inkling. Cold sores can be painful and they’re certainly not pretty. So when I’m feeling down about my appearance with a cold sore, I tap into that confidence I’ve built from running and remind myself the discomfort is only temporary and short-lived with Abreva®.
