Vintage Painted Mantel for a Bit of Drama

The past few months have seen several subtle changes in my home. The newest change is my vintage painted mantel that gets a bit of drama with new coat of almost-black paint.

Today I’m joining the Seasonal Simplicity group of bloggers to bring you the best of the spring season with our decorated mantels. For me, it meant painting my mantel in Wrought Iron by Benjamin Moore. The wall behind and inside the mantel has a fresh coat of Mole’s Breath by Farrow and Ball. It’s the same color I recently used in my family room.

Keeping with my earthy, organic theme, my mantel is flanked with a few favorite houseplants. My newest acquisition is a jade plant that hubby gave me for my birthday. It looks like a little tree and that makes me happy.

Do you see how the new Wrought Iron paint color better emphasizes the details of the mantel? I’m also painting my interior doors the same color to add depth to the rooms. And of course, now I’m thinking about painting the mirror or perhaps replacing it altogether. I think a slightly larger mirror would work better.

A few of my white ironstone pitchers line my vintage painted mantel for spring. I like the contrast of the white against the dark paint.

My favorite ceramic gardenia candle joins the group. The fragrance is perfect for spring!

My houseplants add the spring of green to lighten the mood. I think I’m leaving the wall color in here as is – White Dove by Benjamin Moore.

  1. LOVE the mantle! Have you thought of stripping the mirror and staining it to match the table on the left? That would tie it into the rug. Do you paint with brush or sponge roller? I like the finish of the mantle.

  2. Everything looks wonderful Jennifer. So right the new color brings out the details of your mantle. Love the ironstone on top it pops.

  3. Absolutely beautiful… This post has given me so many ideas!!! Love the stacked baskets…… Maybe a large oversized round mirror ?? Since you are thinking of moving / replacing ( even though it looks great !!!) …. Saw that done yesterday over on Thistlewood Farms FB post!! 🙂

  4. As usual, the changes to your home are spot on. The dark paint makes such a statement and calls attention to the great details of the piece. I’m sure whatever you decide about the mirror will be the right choice, but right now it seems to get lost in all the updates, which are amazing. I absolutely love the Wrought Iron paint color. I’m needing to do something to make a change to my small front porch and I think that color would do wonders for my front door.

  5. Oh Jennifer, I love your collection of pitchers. Displaying them on the mantel is absolute perfection. I’ve started a collection of my own and while I only have a handful of pitchers here, you’ve given me tons of inspiration. So fun to participate in this hop with you! xo

  6. Love the mantle indeed….I agree an overall larger mirror will bring in more light and look awesome. I have my best luck at resale/thrift stores. Always coming home with another mirror and hubby asking where are you going to put this one? lol

  7. So Beautiful! I too have a mantle that I just bought for 50 dollars and painted but I’m at a loss on how to attach it to my wall! How did you ? Thanks Lisa
