Redecorating the Dining Room with Childhood Memories in Mind
There are days when I have no desire to decorate or do anything different in my home. And then there are days (or months) when I’m chafing at the bit to open a can of paint and get creative. That’s how I feel right now and this time, my eye is on redecorating the dining room.
If you read my blog regularly you might know that I gave my big dining table to my daughter. The deal was that she needed to host holiday dinners at her house. I agreed to help cook though. I then ordered a round dining table to replace it. So now I’m looking at inspirational photos for ideas on redecorating the dining room once the table arrives. I love the scalloped light fixture and built-in shelves in this cozy space.
I’m still waiting for my table to arrive from Pottery Barn – hopefully before Thanksgiving. When I was a kid our family dining table was a really large, solid wood pedestal table. It comfortably fit all seven of us. So now while I’m planning the new space, I’m reminded of family meals from childhood.
Slipcovered dining chairs create a little more formality. I prefer them over upholstered chairs that are hard to clean if food gets dropped on them. At least you can easily remove the slipcovers and wash them. I still haven’t chosen my chairs yet. Mostly because I can’t make up my mind.
This dining space pulls at my heartstrings. I love its warmth but with all the windows, it’s not too dark.
Here’s a pretty dining room for those of you who enjoy coastal style. Light blue walls, linen slipcovered chairs, and a rich, dark wood table.

Windsor chairs (a favorite of mine) gather around a gate leg table.
Banquettes are a great option for round tables. This cozy dining nook can enjoy warm fires on wintry days.
Here’s another banquette with a pedestal table. The sailboat is a great touch against the brick wall.
Dining ’round this table affords views of the water outside. Pretty chairs, a unique chandelier, expansive windows, and vintage bottles in shades of green create a perfect spot to gather for meals.

There’s plenty of inspiration available for redecorating the dining room. Now I just need to choose some chairs to go with the table when it arrives.

These dining rooms are all beautiful! I recently gave away my big round, or oval with the insert, pedestal table- it just didn’t work in my smaller current house. I replaced it with a smaller rectangular farmhouse style table but kept the pressed back chairs that came with the pedestal one. A better fit for my home, BUT these photos have me feeling some regret, lol.
I love the white table and blue chairs. GORGEOUS.
When we downsized we had to get a different table and chairs. I was blessed to find an antique French style set- perfect size for our combo dining/living room. However its diminutive, antique size with rush seated chairs makes it uncomfortable for “larger” people. So, I ordered 2 velvet padded chairs to use at each end of the table to will help with the comfort problem. All that to say, keep the comfort factor in mind when making your choice. As we get older, it seems like comfort over style becomes more and more the deciding factor in our fashion and decor choices!!! 🤣
I loved the white table and blue chairs, but what was really pretty was those windows and that view. I will be excited to see the table and chairs you choose.
The round oak table brings good memories to me. I sat next to my father for many years at the table for three meals a day. Fresh vegetables from the garden and meat from the smokehouse. Wonderful memories.
All beautiful rooms. There is not one I don’t like although the white table/blue chairs is the winner for me. As always a great choice of images, thank you Jennifer for sharing.
I love the flooring in that first photo. Looking forward to seeing what you do in your dining room.
I love the 3rd pic it seems cosy to me, but I can’t wait to see what you get.
