The Most Adorable Cape Cod Cottage: A Sensational Coastal Retreat
In the heart of Narragansett’s coastal Bonnet Shores neighborhood, a 1930s Cape Cod cottage has been thoughtfully transformed into a year-round sanctuary that honors its historic charm while embracing modern living. This labor of love was undertaken by interior designer Monique Sabatino of Balanced Interiors and her husband, Mike, who, after years of dreaming, returned to the seaside community where they first met.
ย
The two-bedroom, one-bath cottage had sat unsold for two years, its promise hidden beneath layers of neglect. Though contractors advised tearing it down, the Sabatinos looked past the wear and tear, drawn to its solid structure and the chance to restore its original charm.
ย
Key vintage features of the home like the large fieldstone fireplace, fir floors, and cottage-style woodwork were retained to ensure the original character was felt.
ย
It wasn’t just the aesthetics and surface appearances that were elevated in the Cape Cod cottage. The renovation included lifting the existing structure to add a new basement, constructing a master suite, and expanding the sunroom. This approach allowed the living space to be increased without compromising the home’s original footprint or charm. And as you can see, there’s plenty of charm throughout.

kitchen blends timeless charm with modern functionality. Crisp white cabinetry contrasts beautifully with warm wood accents, most notably the striking custom range hood that adds a touch of rustic elegance. The soft gray backsplash tiles and patterned mosaic behind the stove create visual interest, while the marbled countertops and stainless steel appliances add a refined, contemporary feel. Natural light pours in through the window above the farmhouse sink, enhancing the inviting, airy atmosphere.
ย
A standout feature of the Cape Cod cottage renovation is the expanded sunroom, which serves as a serene retreat within the home. This space is thoughtfully designed to be both mindful and cozy, reflecting the couples’ commitment to creating environments that promote wellness and relaxation.
ย
The sunroom’s design incorporates natural materials and a soothing color palette, fostering a connection with the outdoors while providing a comfortable indoor space. Large windows allow ample natural light to flood the room, enhancing its tranquil ambiance and making it an ideal spot for reading, meditation, or simply enjoying the view.

The primary bedroom exudes classic coastal charm with a touch of timeless elegance. Anchored by a wrought-iron bed frame and a cozy patchwork quilt in muted blues and creams, the room feels both grounded and inviting. Natural light streams through multiple windows and a set of French doors, which open to a garden view and blur the line between indoors and out. Outdoor living was equally important in the renovation.

Monique Sabatino’s vision for the cottage reflects her design philosophy: creating spaces that are both beautiful and functional, honoring the past while embracing the present. The Bonnet Shores cottage stands as a testament to this approach, blending historical preservation with contemporary comfort to create a home that is as welcoming as it is timeless.

What an undertaking but so cute! They were brave. I noted the outward opening windows in the sunroom. No screens necessary this close to the ocean? It’s one of the things I remember about visiting England…that bug screens were not needed.
This is the cutest home and not over done. Love it.
Such a human scale exterior and not too overdone interior. It looks like someone actually lives there. The warmth and sense of place have been retained even while they have updated and brought in so many lovely details. Thanks for sharing this one.
