Thinkin’ about the Kitchen

When the weather turns cooler, I find myself spending more time in the kitchen. Fall always puts me in the mood to cook and bake. Maybe it has something to do with harvest time.

Last year this time I was busy canning tomatoes from the garden.
This year, the crop wasn’t so hot and there’s not enough left over to can for the winter.
Maybe that’s a good thing because it frees me up to do other things.
Like think about the kitchen and changes I want to make to it.
I love all the white trim in my old kitchen. The windows above the sink are also a fave.
Older homes have a unique charm that pull at my heartstrings.
And sometimes you need to add a little more charm to older homes. Like bead board.
Hubby installed bead board half way up the walls a few years ago and it made a huge difference.
But the bead board needs a new coat of paint now.
The trim will stay white, but the walls will get a new color.
I’m eyeing Country Tan, Antique White, or Foggy Skies.
Some new countertops would be great, too. Just don’t know what I want though.
Not granite. It’s pretty, but it’s too modern. Maybe butcher block. I don’t know.
I’ve already bought some shelves for open shelving. No enclosed upper cabinets for me.
We have a large built-in cabinet in the kitchen that’s original to the house.
It also needs to be painted and some major organizing of the drawers and shelves needs to get done.
I’ve been stocking up on white dishes and old milk bottles to display on the shelves.
I’m shooting for a farmhouse French kinda theme. Probably more farm than French.
I would absolutely love a farmhouse sink. Maybe that will be my one splurge.
Yep, a new farmhouse sink and new faucet would be just the ticket.
Or maybe that will be “phase 2” of the kitchen makeover. We’ll see.
While I’m thinkin’ about the kitchen, I think I’ll use these tomatoes for dinner tonight.
Gonna make some muffin tin lasagna cups that I found over at Tatertots and Jello.

  1. I’d love a farm house sink too. And I agree with you, granite is pretty but it’s just not my style. I love the white beadboard. My kitchen is butter yellow and I’m dreaming of a white kichen. I look forward to seeing what you decide to do.

  2. LOVE your photos! We did a pretty big kitchen remdoel and I have ‘some’ bead board but, I want to cover some wall paper and hoping I can talk my hubbie into doing it this winter!!!

  3. Oh I would love butcher block countertops too. However, my counterops are only 4 years old?? My husband did say maybe to a farmhouse sink though :)Hmmm, maybe my countertops will get messed up with the sink install???
I just can’t wait to see what you decide to do.
    Blessings,
    Chrissy

  4. I’d love open shelves instead of upper cabinets! When we had the cabinet doors off to paint, it was so convenient to grab things off the shelves without opening doors. If you haven’t already done so, check out IKEA for butcherblock counters and farmhouse sinks. I just went with my daughter to pick hers up and their prices can’t be beat! I’m sure your farmhouse kitchen will be charming. Can’t wait to see your built-in cupboard!

  5. I love all your ideas. I wish I would have gotten a farm house sink when we re-did our kitchen a few years back. Maybe next time… I’m with you on granite. I like the look of butcher block with white cabinets.

  6. The plans for your kitchen sound wonderful….I would have beadboard in every room of the house if I could!!! We still have the original beadboard on the walls of our staircase and it is so fabulous. I just wish we had more!!!!
Love your little wire dish strainer, it will look fabulous next to a farmhouse sink. I think you should definetely make that your splurge ;o)
    Happy Sunday!

  7. I love your kitchen!! The beadboard is darling!! The tomatoes in the window are so cute! How do you get your photos to turn out so nice??! When ever I try to photograph my sink, it turns out so dark!! Anyway, I am your newest follower and I would love for you to follow me back! Cheers~ Deanna

  8. Your kitchen looks so welcoming and homey. Your pictures are lovely and peaceful. I’m redoing my kitchen of a very tight budget. I know what you mean about picking one item to splurge on and even then my splurges are a lot less than most people. I splurged on a new floor, but haven’t installed it yet. Kind of scared to tackle it and it was to pricey to have the store install it. Got to work up my nerve for that one. Thanks for sharing your kitchen – it gives me inspiration to move forward on mine.

  9. Having done our kitchen over 2 years ago (our house was built in 1909), if you want a great countertop go with soapstone! So easy to care for, cheaper than granite, very very old fashioned, you can set hot stuff right on it or cut on it. Love it.
And we got a farmhouse sink – FireClay. The sink is lovely and large, but I have to get something to prevent more chipping :/
Wood floors are so much easier on the feet. Hubby painted ours in a beautiful black and white diagonal squares. Come visit and see!

  10. Lovely photos Jennifer!
I agree with you, I chose open shelves, no upper cabinets and farmhouse sink (not only one but two!) for my new/old kitchen.
Lovely vintage wire dish strainer, I have been looking for one here.
    Besos! Silvina

  11. We had a great tomatoe harvest this year and thats why I’m stuck canning tom’s instead of creating like you are. Lovely blog, I like that it shows beauty in small things, like your curtians or just the tom’s or you nice tea towels.
    Blessings from Canada.

  12. I love it when people just share what they are thinking about. Nothing concrete… just thinking.
    I like that.
I’ve been thinking about my kitchen too.

I like all your new plans…love the beadboard… and farmhouse sinks sound wonderful. Not into the granite… but the butcher block sounds lovely!
    …here’s to dreaming! Pat
