Tips for a Dining Room Makeover

dining room decor, farmhouse style October 2, 2017

This post is sponsored by Cost Plus World Market and contains affiliate links. All opinions are my own.

This time of year always puts me in the mood to bake and cook! I think it’s part of that nesting feeling I get when the days get cooler and shorter. Since the plan is to share some of that food with loved ones, it’s time I hustle my bustle and get the dining room done. Earlier this year I turned our dining room into a sitting room and now need to transform the living room into a dining space. I thought I’d share my tips for a dining room makeover while I’m in planning mode. I’m also sharing some inspiration I found at Cost Plus World Market.

Tips for planning a dining room makeover

1. Choose a Theme

This first tip might seem obvious, but it’s super important. Choose a decorating theme for your dining room makeover and stick to it! Before making a purchase for the space, ask yourself if it fits the theme. My dining room theme is farmhouse decor – think Fixer Upper style.

2. Paint Walls and Install Flooring

Before you do anything else, it’s best to take care of the basics first. Paint or wallpaper walls and add any decorative elements like crown molding or a chair rail. If you need new flooring, now is the time to take care of that too – before bringing in new furniture.

3. Select Your Dining Table

The dining table is the focal point of your room, and this is the first selection you should make if you’re not using an existing table. If you’re going to splurge on an item, this is where you should invest your money. I went shopping online at Cost Plus World Market and found dining room furniture and more, like the Wood Theodora table that is so appealingly rustic. They’re having a Friends and Family sale with 30% off your purchase – details at the end of this post!

4. Choose Your Chairs

Once you’ve selected your table, it’s time to add the chairs. You might choose a dining set where the chairs match the table, but it’s perfectly acceptable to buy complementary chairs that aren’t from the same collection. Just refer back to tip number one to make sure the chairs fit your theme.

5. Select a Light Fixture

The dining room is the one room in the house where you can really make a statement with a light fixture, whether you choose a glamorous chandelier or an industrial pendant light, just make sure it fits your theme and table size.

5. Add Accent Furniture

Make sure your dining room accent furniture is conducive to eating and entertaining. Buffets with extra storage, console tables for holding food and serving pieces, bar carts, and similar are all great choices. My Cost Plus World Market store is located in St. Charles, IL – right down the street from where I work. I often go shopping there during my lunch break!

6. Select Decorative Elements

This is often the fun part of a dining room makeover. The hard work is done and now you can select your rug, art pieces for the wall, a centerpiece for the table, and maybe even new dinnerware and table linens. All those final touches where you can infuse your personality into the space.

Thank you for the step by step. I am just starting a major revamp our our home interior and I confess, I am a garden geek and artist but not a decorator so I am stumbling in the dark here. I look for practical tips to help guide me and this is perfect.

These are good tips for doing a makeover. I think I must do mine backwards b/c I don’t have a theme. I just work around what I have first. These are all pretty things to start with though! Pinned.

Lovely!!! Love all the soft muted fall colors here in your dining room makeover, Jennifer. <3 Shared and pinned. Cost-Plus does have lovely things over there ~ it's where I'll pick up tins of Harney and Sons tea, too. 🙂 A very first purchase I ever made was when Cost-Plus was pretty new to me (1978): I bought a wicker trunk to store things in when I was 16 years old; I still have it though I finally painted it white. <3
