Wicker Furniture Done Right: A Practical Choice for Porches
Wicker porch furniture has long been a staple of outdoor living, synonymous with relaxed summer afternoons, iced tea in hand, and the comforting creak of a rocking chair beneath you. Whether your porch overlooks a wide green lawn, a coastal bluff, or a quiet suburban street, wicker furniture brings a sense of timeless charm, easy elegance, and nostalgic comfort to the space.

My porch is in need of a makeover and I’m on the hunt for wicker furniture that’s sturdy, comfortable, but not too expensive. I just want something to freshen up the space-nothing too drastic. Something like this would be super charming and perfect for my style of house.

Natural vs. Synthetic Wicker
Modern wicker porch furniture is typically available in two primary materials: natural wicker and synthetic resin wicker. Natural wicker is often made from rattan or cane and offers an organic, earthy appearance. However, it is best suited for covered or enclosed porches since it can be vulnerable to moisture and sun damage over time.
Synthetic wickerโusually made from high-density polyethyleneโis designed to withstand the elements, making it your best option for open porches and patios. It mimics the look of traditional wicker but provides increased durability, fade resistance, and easy maintenance. Many synthetic options are handwoven, so you can still enjoy the artisanal quality of the original while offering a longer lifespan.

Classic Forms, Contemporary Appeal
Wicker porch furniture comes in a variety of styles, from the ornate curves of vintage Victorian pieces to the clean lines of modern modular seating. Popular options include:
- Wicker Rockers โ A quintessential porch piece, the wicker rocking chair is perfect for slow mornings or long chats at sunset. With cushions or without, they offer comfort and nostalgia in equal measure.
- Wicker Sofas and Loveseats โ Ideal for larger porches, these pieces offer cozy seating for gatherings or solo relaxation.
- Wicker Swings โ A hanging wicker bench adds movement and charm, turning any porch into a whimsical escape.
- Wicker Coffee and Side Tables โ Complete the setup with coordinating tables to hold drinks, books, or planters

You can find this furniture in a variety of colors, from classic white or natural brown to contemporary shades of charcoal, navy, or sage – even red as seen on the cheery porch below. You can always paint vintage wicker furniture to refresh old pieces and customize the look to fit your style and your home’s exterior color.

Styling a Porch with Wicker
Wickerโs light, woven texture pairs beautifully with a variety of design elements, making it easy to style around. To create a comfortable and cohesive porch space, consider the following tips keeping the size of your porch in mind:
- Layer with Cushions and Throws: Add plush, weather-resistant cushions in prints and colors that suit your home’s exterior. Stripes, florals, and solids all work well, especially when mixed together.
- Add Natural Accents: Wicker complements other organic materials such as wood, jute, linen, and terra cotta. Consider adding a woven rug, potted plants, and a driftwood coffee table to complete the look.
- Include Soft Lighting: Lanterns, string lights, or a vintage-style floor lamp can transform your porch into a magical space in the evenings.
- Use Versatile Pieces: Nesting tables, storage ottomans, and movable stools make the porch more flexible for entertaining or lounging.

Benefits Beyond Beauty
Wicker porch furniture doesnโt just look goodโitโs also practical. The lightweight nature of wicker makes it easy to move, rearrange, or store. Itโs ideal for homes where the porch might transition from a quiet reading nook to a lively entertaining space on weekends.
In addition, the breathable design of wicker furniture is naturally cool in hot climates. Unlike metal or wood, wicker wonโt retain excessive heat, making it more comfortable to sit on during sunny days. If you’ve ever sat on a metal or wood chair that’s been in the sun for a while, you’ll know what I mean!

Caring for Wicker
Maintaining wicker furniture is relatively simple, especially with synthetic options. For synthetic wicker, simply wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap (or just water). Natural wicker may require more gentle careโoccasional vacuuming with a soft brush attachment and avoiding prolonged exposure to sun or rain can help prolong its life.
For both types, storing cushions indoors during heavy rain or winter months will keep the furniture looking fresh season after season. You can also invest in waterproof furniture covers for additional protection.

A Lasting Investment in Outdoor Living
Wicker porch furniture is more than just outdoor seatingโitโs an invitation to slow down. It calls to mind the simple pleasures of porch living: waving to neighbors, sipping lemonade, reading a good book in the shade. Whether your home is coastal, traditional, farmhouse, or modern, wicker adapts beautifully, offering timeless style and everyday comfort.

If you’re like me and are looking to update your outdoor space, wicker can be a smart investment that blends aesthetics with function. It’s lightweight yet sturdy, charming yet durable, traditional yet surprisingly current. In today’s age of fast trends and fleeting design moments, wicker remains steadfast.

We have a screened porch. We purchased Lloyd Flanders
Synthetic wicker in a light tan. Sofa and two chairs and a square glass table. Also purchased their mid priced cushions in denim. Very comfortable. Stays out all weather. I cover the cushions by sliding each cushion in a clear leaf bags. Nothing better than a summer afternoon on this sofa with ceiling fans twirling. Happy shopping!
I miss a porch swing! We had one when I was growing up, One summer when my Dad was working sheet metal in Kansas City during the week, my mother and I milked our small dairy herd. In the evening, after we chored and had our baths, we’d put on our airy summer nightgowns, sit in the porch swing, and watch night descend, the fireflies come out and the tree frogs start up, surrounded by the fragrance of petunias. I hope you have space for a porch swing.
I love them all!
They would be covered in spider webs on my porch ๐
Thank you Jennifer for the beautiful images

We got quite a deal on a set of Lloyd Flanders wicker, on Marketplace, and we love it!
We have the Lloyd Flanders porch swing from years ago, too. It is great furniture – nice looking and durable.
I have some wicker furniture on my screened-in porch that I have had for 17 years and it looks almost like new. It has aged so has a few dark areas in some of the wicker, I do give a goood washing in the spring. Good luck on finding something you will love.
