Fall in Love with Sandwich, MA: Boardwalks, Beaches, and Coastal Charm
Tucked into the upper curve of Cape Cod along the bay, the historic town of Sandwich, MA, offers a timeless New England experience. As the oldest town on the Capeโestablished in 1637โSandwich blends colonial charm with coastal beauty, inviting you to slow down and soak in the surroundings. With its picturesque boardwalk, windswept beaches, quaint shops, beloved cafรฉs like Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters, and lush landscapes at Heritage Museums & Gardens, Sandwich feels like a chapter from a Cape Cod storybook.

Initially I booked an Airbnb in the charming town of Chatham, MA, for this summer’s vacation, but changed it a few months later to a Cape Cod style home in Sandwich, MA. I like the fact that Sandwich is the oldest town on the Cape and it’s more centrally located to everything we wanted to do, like take a ferry to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.
I’m extremely happy I made the switch because when we visited Chatham, it was very crowded. Sandwich is more laid back and although it still had vacationers, it’s way less congested. Plus we had this breathtaking view from the deck of our Airbnb.

This marsh is what separates the rental home from Cape Cod Bay. We could watch the tide rise and fall, and at its peak, the marshy area looked more like a lake.
Our Airbnb was the quintessential Cape style home with perky colorful flowers waiting to greet us. The home is on a quiet cul-de-sac within walking distance of the downtown area.

The interior spaces were charming and inviting.

The view from the kitchen windows looks over the marsh.

The Iconic Sandwich Boardwalk
No visit to Sandwich, MA is complete without a stroll along the townโs iconic boardwalk. Stretching over a thousand feet across salt marshes and tidal creeks, the boardwalk connects the town to Town Neck Beach, which is uncrowded. Made of weathered planks and flanked by panoramic views, the walk is both meditative and scenic. Locals and tourists alike walk its length, pausing to spot egrets, crabs, or the occasional kayaker gliding below.

The boardwalk has a story of resilienceโit was destroyed by Hurricane Bob in 1991 and rebuilt with donations from the community. Each plank is engraved with the name of a donor, a loved one, or a message, turning the structure into a living scrapbook of memories. It’s not just a pathway to the beachโit’s a treasured part of the townโs identity. We enjoyed reading the planks, one which read “We love Aunt Lucy.” Some of the more courageous kids enjoyed jumping off the bridge into the tidal creek at high tide.

Town Neck Beach
At the end of the boardwalk lies Town Neck Beach, a favorite among families, photographers, and beachcombers. With calm waters on Cape Cod Bay and a backdrop of grassy dunes and rock jetties, itโs ideal for wading, relaxing, or searching for sea glass.

Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters: A Cozy Retreat
Back in town, Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters is a favorite gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. I have to give a shout out to Snowy Owl because we ordered coffee every morning (it’s within walking distance from the Airbnb) and took it back to the house to enjoy the view of the marsh in the morning. Snowy Owl serves up expertly brewed coffee in a charmingly rustic interior space with beans roasted on site (you can watch them roast the beans), and the coffee was so good I brought a few bags of the beans home with me.

Local Shops and Village Charm
Downtown Sandwich offers the kind of New England shopping experience that feels rare and genuine. Lining the streets are small, independently-owned boutiques, galleries, and antique stores. You might wander into The Spotted Cod to browse nautical home dรฉcor or step into Painted Daisies for unique gifts and local crafts. These shops reflect the creativity and coastal spirit of the area.

The Belfry Bistro in Sandwich is a remarkably atmospheric restaurant housed in a beautifully restored former church, complete with soaring ceilings, stained-glass windows, and a roaring fireplace that create a uniquely elegant dining ambiance.

We had to take a trip to Titcombโs Bookshop in East Sandwich which is a familyโowned independent bookstore founded in 1969, now spanning three floors of thoughtfully curated new and used books, toys, cards, and gifts. I always love a good bookstore and this one didn’t disappoint. The exterior was just as interesting as the interior with its collection of new and vintage books.

Heritage Museums & Gardens
A popular attraction in Sandwich, MA is the Heritage Museums & Gardens, a stunning 100-acre property that offers a rich blend of art, history, and nature. It just so happened they were hosting a hydrangea festival and I couldn’t pass that up. Look at the gorgeousness of these flowers in the garden!

Of course, I had to have a sandwich while in Sandwich so we stopped at the Marshland Restaurant and Bakery and ordered sandwiches to go. But since the interior was so dang cute and retro, we came back a couple days later for breakfast and sat at the old-fashioned counter stools.

A Place to Return To
Sandwich, MA is more than just a summer destinationโitโs a town that quietly works its way into your heart. Whether you’re crossing the boardwalk at sunset, sipping the best coffee in the state, admiring blooms in a garden, or browsing local shops, there’s a sense of peace and authenticity here thatโs hard to come by.

Itโs no surprise that many who visit once return year after year. The charming good looks of the downtown area, the well-kept historic homes, the abundance of good restaurants, an uncrowded beach, and so much more make this quaint town the perfect Cape Cod vacation for those who don’t like fighting crowds.

Give me a few days to edit more of my photos – the historic homes of the Cape Cod area are beautifully iconic!

Wow! Beautifully done. Great photographs. Thank you!
I’m so glad you had a lovely time on the Cape. Sandwich is beautiful! These photos are gorgeous!
Thanks, Danielle. I wish I’d had time to connect with you while we were there. The traffic was more than what I expected so we didn’t want to be in the car anymore than we had to be. LOL.
Loved loved loved reading every word. I felt I was there with you. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to more of this darling place
While having no desire to go out west, I would love to explore the NE a bit more. There’s just something that tugs at my heart to visit those places where our national story began. Beautiful pictures and storylines and I’m looking forward to more. Thanks, Jen.
Jennifer,
I am so happy to hear you made it to Cape Cod and the islands! You picked one of the best towns to visit!
Sandwich is lovely. That area of the Cape is the prettiest, in my opinion.
I have been blessed to have my best friend from high school live there since our early 20s…so I get to go anytime I want to. I think they call her a “blow ashore” since she wasn’t born there.
You sure know how to pick your travel spots!
Christine
New Hampshire
Hi Christine! How fortunate to have a friend who lives there. All of New England is special, in my opinion. I’d love to get back to the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
What a wonderful town. Really enjoyed reading about it and seeing pics. Thanks!
That was such a great place to visit. I could probably spend a month, Thanks for this information and pictures, can’t wait to see more. I’m sure it was hard to leave!!
Jennifer, I enjoyed your pictures of Cape Cod so much! It brought so many memories back of times spent on Cape Cod. We absolutely loved our time spent there and now I think my hubby and I should plan another trip as it has been quite a few years since we were there. Thanks for sharing this wonderful place with us! So glad that you had such a wonderful holiday!
Hi Jennifer,
So happy to hear you had a wonderful vacation! Your photos were gorgeous! Looking forward to seeing the rest! We live in Barnstable Village, which is about 15 minutes from Sandwich, and my husband and I just walked all around Sandwich’s Main Street a few days ago because we love the quaintness you mentioned!! I wonder if we might have passed each other!!
I always look so forward to your posts; thank you for the variety, and also for sharing with your readers, parts of your beautiful home! It is so inspiring!
Have a wonderful week!
Linda
Great post about Sandwich! Quick question: is there a best time of year to visit to avoid crowds but still enjoy the full town charm? Thanks!
Hi Anselme. I would say to visit in September when the ocean water is somewhat warm from the summer months. Kids are back in school and less families are vacationing. But I’ll bet it’s beautiful in October, too!
Wonderful post! It is sooo important that we protect our history. Thank you.
Danielle
Glad you enjoyed it, Danielle!
