Leave it to Alison Kandler, the queen of color, to craft a whimsical mix of patterns to create cozy appeal in a living room. Not only do you have pillows for your relaxing comfort, but a side table with quilts is available when you need a little extra warmth.

There’s not a solid pillow in sight in this charming alcove that’s perfect for reading or sleeping. The patriotic mix of fabrics generates a coastal vibe. And aren’t the little globe lantern lights adorable? The rag rug is a perfect choice, too.

Farmhouse fabrics are a fun choice for adding cozy appeal with pillows.

I love this quirky little corner with paint-by-numbers artwork on the wall and patterned pillows on the couch. It exudes a fun, eclectic vibe.

Pastel pillows can create cozy comfort, too. A large floral, a wide stripe, and a small geometric print make for a pleasing display on the bed.

Create a cozy alcove with an array of checked, striped, and solid pillows. When pairing patterns, consider tossing in a solid or two to give the eye a place to rest.

Designer Sarah Richardson isn’t fearful when it comes to using color and patterns. She uses solid spring green fabric on the loveseat and center pillow to help ground the rest of the patterns and color used throughout the space.

Consider using patterned shams in a bedroom. I love the sweet floral and striped shams from GreenRow, and they typically use organic and sustainable materials in their offerings.

  1. Beautiful and love the mixing of patterns! My one pet peeve with pillows is a plain back or reverse side – I feel like I’m paying for half of a pillow. No matter how much I like the pattern, won’t buy unless pattern on both sides.

    1. Debby, I’m right there with you! I don’t typically like when a pattern is only on one side either. But I’ve purchased a few that are like this, only because I really liked the pillow.
