Salvaged Wood Sign Project

Did I mention I’m a runner? A marathoner, actually. Running outdoors lets me experience nature up close and personal. On garbage day, I get to run past all the piles of junk and see if there’s anything worth grabbing. And sometimes, when I run in the woods I come across salvageable artifacts … as was the case recently when I found a scrap of wood that was the perfect size for a sign. And yes, I had to run back home with this under my arm.

Using a dry brush, I swept on some Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White.
Using the dry brush allowed the grain of the wood to show through.
I had a perfect spot in the bedroom for the sign and decided to stencil “Sweet Dreams” in black.
I already had the chalk paint, stencils and stencil paint in the cupboard.
The stenciling was super easy.
Spacing the letters was probably the most challenging part of this project.
You might remember my bedroom from a previous post. After looking at the photos,
the room seemed a little sparse. Funny how things look different through a camera lens.
The sign provides a little dimension and texture to the room.
This bed used to be a plain 4-poster. We cut down the posts (believe it or not), added
finials and scrollwork to the headboard and then painted the whole thing white.
The angel pillow on the bed is new. Found it at a decorating store for $4.99.
So the Sweet Dreams sign cost me absolutely nothing since the wood was free,
and the paint and stencils were already on hand. Not bad for a morning’s run out in the woods, huh?

  4. That looks great. I have an old piece of wood that I have been meaning to salvage. I added one coat of paint but then we moved before I could do anything else. It has been with us through 3 moves so far and I never hubby gripes every time he unpacks it. I guess maybe I need to get it out of the garage and finally finish it. Lol. Thanks for the inspiration. I love your blog. I’m your newest follower. Would love you to stop by DIY Home Sweet Home
