Small Space Decorating: The Best Ideas for You
Decorating small spaces can be a bit challenging but doable if you keep a few things in mind. Every piece in the room has to earn its place. The good news? Small rooms can feel layered, cozy, and beautifully designed without feeling cramped. With a few thoughtful choices, even the tiniest corners can feel intentional and inviting. My home is over 150 years old so every room is small. Here are some of my favorite small space decorating ideas.
1. Go Vertical With Storage and Style
When square footage is limited, think upward. Tall bookcases, vertical shiplap, stacked art, and elongated mirrors draw the eye up and make ceilings feel higher. Although I don’t have bookcases in my home, I’ve managed to elongate walls with the addition of board and batten beadboard wainscoting. When it comes to shelving, use books, baskets, and a few meaningful decorative pieces so they feel curated, not cluttered. Feel free to add plants and flowers for softness.
2. Choose Light Colors But Add Depth
Light walls like soft whites, pale grays, muted sage, or gentle blues reflect natural light and make a room feel more open. Layer in depth with texture like woven baskets, linen curtains, patterned pillows, and perhaps one jewel-toned accent for warmth. A small room shines when it feels thoughtfully layered – like repeating textures such as the bamboo shade and rattan pendant light.
3. Use Multifunctional Furniture
In a compact space, furniture should work overtime. Storage ottomans, benches with hidden compartments, drop-leaf tables, and wall-mounted desks keep rooms flexible and functional. This is especially helpful in small living rooms or studio apartments where one space may serve multiple purposes throughout the day. For example, the coffee table in my family room does double duty as a storage unit.
Here, an entryway makes great use of this concept with a comfy bench that includes storage. Note how the walls are dark blue – don’t shy away from deeper colors for small space decorating. It can add to the cozy ambiance.
4. Define Zones With Rugs and Lighting
Even in a small footprint, you can create the feeling of separate โrooms.โ An area rug under a seating arrangement or a pendant light over a tiny dining table visually defines each zone. In this cozy lakeside cottage, the porch and entry on the left is defined by a small throw rug and star-shaped light above. The dining and living space has no rug at all, allowing the main area of the home to feel larger.
5. Embrace Mirrors and Reflective Surfaces
Mirrors are one of the oldest tricks in the book for small space decorating. A well-placed mirror reflects light and visually doubles the room. Consider hanging a larger mirror opposite a window or incorporating subtle reflective elements like glass lamps or mirrored trays. Several years ago, I created a gallery wall of vintage mirrors in my small dining room to visually expand the space. This wall is directly opposite a window and so was a great solution to add more light and the feeling of spaciousness.
6. Keep the Floor Visually Open
Furniture with exposed legs allows light to flow underneath, creating the illusion of more space. Avoid overly bulky pieces that sit heavily on the floor. In small rooms, fewer pieces often feel more elevated than squeezing in too much.
7. Add Personality With Small-Scale Details
Small space decorating is the perfect opportunity to be bold in contained ways. A charming gallery wall, patterned wallpaper in a powder room, or a colorful accent chair can make the space feel intentionally designed rather than simply โsmall.โ Because the footprint is limited, you can splurge on special details without overwhelming the room, like this English style living room.
Overall, the key to decorating small spaces is balance, a mix of function with beauty, openness with coziness, and simplicity with personality. Instead of fighting the size of the room, lean into it. Smaller rooms naturally feel intimate and welcoming, and sometimes, the tiniest spaces in your home ends up being the most charming.

Just what I needed this morning, thanks, Jennifer.
With cats and dogs in my house, I’m seriously thinking about taking out my area rugs-it would be so much easier to keep clean and fresh.
I’ll bet when people walk into that entryway, they go “wow”. Impressive. Love the last room. The green, white, and pop of pink is so pretty and relaxing. Furniture looks comfortable too.
I sure can use all these suggestions, my rooms are small too, thanks.
