Cheery Guest Cottage Gets Decked Out in Red, White, and Blue
Since it’s the 4th of July holiday weekend, it seems only appropriate to feature a cheery guest cottage by Brakefield Design Collection that’s festooned in red, white, and blue. The color combo creates an uplifting personality for this backyard cottage.

Heading into the entryway of the guest cottage, you’re greeted by a popular star-patterned floor. I’m seeing this floor in magazines and on websites. Two years ago, it was the bathroom flooring in the Michigan Airbnb where we stayed. It was also in the kitchen of this eclectic South Carolina home I featured a few months ago. The red shelf and bench add energy and fun to the space.

The kitchen is small but very stylish decorated in red and white. The brushed gold faucet lends a touch of elegance to the cottage-style room.

Red is such an energizing color and it looks great against the white paneled walls of the backyard guest cottage. Notice that even though the appliances are stainless steel, brushed gold was chosen for the hardware. So yes, you can mix metallics even in a small space. In fact, I think the room has more depth than it would have if silver hardware was used.

A smaller sink with similar faucet graces the bar area that features glass-front upper cabinetry.

A light and bright hallway makes its way to a colorful bedroom.

The Roman shade in the bedroom is the same as the one used in the entryway/mudroom. I like the same use of elements in a home to create a cohesive look – especially in smaller homes like this one. The chair at the vintage desk wears a cute blue, skirted pad.

Solid color bedding and pillows are a great way to let the upholstered fabric on the bed take center stage. I’ve been watching a lot of Project Runway reruns lately and am learning new things about fabric choices. It’s prompting me to be bolder with design.

The beautiful bathroom sticks with a simple blue and white color palette. Despite not having any windows, the bathroom remains light and bright.

Even the Adirondack chairs at the front of the backyard guest cottage wear a fun shade of vivid blue with red pillows.
