The Amazingly Beautiful Southern Homes of Habersham in Beaufort

Tucked on the outskirts of Beaufort, South Carolina is the expertly-planned community of Habersham. Beautiful southern homes, both large and small, line the manicured streets of this residential area that has its own marketplace with tasty restaurants. My daughter, granddaughter, and I chose this place to take a much-needed spring vacation and it didn’t disappoint. Today I’m featuring some of the smaller, quaint homes of this idyllic place.

Although I’m classifying these homes as “smaller,” many of them are over 2,000 square feet in size. They also have a bungalow type architecture to them and are reminiscent of the coastal cottages you see throughout the south.

The South Carolina shoreline is one of my favorite places in the world, also known as Lowcountry. There’s a peaceful, soulful vibe throughout the area and waterfront living is abundant, whether it’s a bay, a river, the ocean, you name it.

Habersham was founded about 30 years ago and was carefully designed and planned. Live oaks draped with Spanish moss are abundant, as are rhododendrons and boxwoods. Every morning I went for a walk around the 650-acre neighborhood and was completely charmed and smitten with everything I saw.

No two houses are alike, which is unusual for a fairly new neighborhood. Landscaping is well-maintained and pride of ownership is obvious. Habersham includes trails, a community pool, single-family homes, townhouses, and condos.

Residents are friendly with many of them driving golf carts around the “town.” Debbie offered me a lift on hers and I found out she retired from Massachusetts to South Carolina. Needless to say, I was quite jealous but enjoyed our conversation.

Love this little pink cottage that looks a bit tan in the photo.

This red-roofed cottage is typical of beautiful southern homes you see throughout Lowcountry. The developer studied the historic homes of Beaufort and the surrounding area when designing Habersham and his painstaking attention to detail shows!

It’s been several years since I last visited South Carolina, but the memory of the faint scent of the ocean mixed with flowering shrubs, towering pine trees, and fresh mulch all came flooding back to me as soon as we stepped outside of the airport in Savannah (which by the way, is the prettiest airport I’ve seen).

Have you noticed that each of these beautiful southern homes has a porch? It wouldn’t be the south without one!

While a majority of the homes are white, you’ll find more colorful options dotting the streets here and there.

Most of the white houses have colored shutters. If you look carefully at the porch swing, you’ll see faux carrots wound around the ropes as part of the home’s Easter decorations.

Seeing green grass and leaves on the trees was such a treat since most of our trees in the Chicago area are just starting to bud. The temperature was high 70s to low 80s while we were in South Carolina.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this little tour around Habersham. I have more beautiful southern homes to share in the near future.

  1. I am a southern gal and I have to say that our low country is out of this world! You should stay over in Savannah and do all the tours. It is magical! Then pop on over to Tybee for all itโ€™s history and charm.

  2. Hi Jennifer, yes, I have been to Beaufort many times. Itโ€™s charming for sure. We have been going to Hilton Head for about 40 years. We discovered it when our kids were little. We find the lush foliage beautiful, you canโ€™t beat Pines & Palms!
The beach is lovely. We are heading there April 19, yay! Like you, I am longing for flowering shrubs and blooming flowers. Weโ€™re in Wheaton, IL. so not too far from you. Just buds on our trees & bushes, canโ€™t wait for them to open. I enjoy your Blog very much!! Happy Spring! ๐ŸŒท

  3. I can remember when the only notable thing about Beaufort was the local Marine Corps base (my oldest brother joined the Corps in 1967). Later,it was a fork in the road on the way to Sea Pines on Hilton Head Island. It’s bittersweet to see these new places pop up. Growth means change and so often the very lifestyle of an area that draws people there, is mitigated by those who move there wanting “more culture”, “more diversity”, more “sparkle”. Ah. Progress.
I’m so glad that you enjoyed your trip to the sleepy, slow Low Country. Sounds like a certain Northern gal might need to move South. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. I love looking at all your house tours, I love seeing the windows and doors and other things they use. My house is only about 1600sq.ft. so 2000 seems big enough. I truly don’t like huge 3000+sq.ft. and wide open floor plan. My son has one like that .and it always seems so empty.

  5. If you have photos of the larger homes it would be a treat to see them. These are all very cute. There is a line of furniture called Habersham Plantation, all beautiful high end pieces. I wonder if there is a connection.
