Charming Cottages Blanketed in Autumn’s Splendor: The Perfect Retreat
Fall colors are nearing their peak in our area and it doesn’t seem quite fair that the colors turn and then the leaves fall so quickly. Although a blanket of colorful leaves is always a pretty sight to behold. Especially when the colors frame charming cottages like the ones I’m showcasing today.
First up is an historic red farmhouse complete with a metal roof. I have a metal roof on the main part of my house and would like to have it redone. I’ve had it worked on a couple times but never completely replaced. I love the sound of rain on a tin roof and always enjoy seeing one on an older home. The leafy trees add a special ambiance to this property with its beautiful stone chimney.
A cheery stucco cottage resides in my childhood hometown of Geneva, Illinois. The maple tree is in full glory, while the trees in the background will probably turn sometime next week. I think the sugar maple trees are my favorite this time of year. Their leaves turn a striking shade of scarlet that sets the sky afire. We’ve got a maple tree in our front yard that turns completely golden and looks like it’s glowing when the sun rises and sets.
Do you ever take a drive out in the country during the autumn season to take in the beauty of fall and admire the farmhouses, barns, and cows in the field? You’re sure to find idyllic homes with big porches for enjoying the views.
A blanket of golden leaves surrounds a red Swedish cottage, creating the perfect autumn color combination. Do you see the tiny window on the second floor? I wonder why that was put there and what’s on the other side.
A tiny yellow cottage is part of Good Templar Park in Geneva, which was founded by Swedes who moved to the area and wanted a vacation place in the woods to gather with like-minded teetotaling friends.
You might remember this little red charmer from last year’s post about charming cottages in the woods. We visited again this year when the park was open to the public.
A craftsman style home blends in with the scenery with its mustard yellow exterior.
Wouldn’t this little green cottage make a cozy retreat for enjoying fall’s beauty? I can envision sleeping in, being woken by the sun, and enjoying a cup of coffee out on the deck before going on a hike. Slow weekends are always the best. I’ve got one planned next weekend with my daughters. We’re going to Heritage Harbor in Ottawa for their Wine and Art festival. Ottawa is just an hour away so it’s perfect for a weekend outing.
A bucolic white farmhouse with yellow shutters and blue trim makes a perfect retreat or home for enjoying autumn’s splendor. You can see that the leaves are just starting to change color. I love when there’s still some green in the trees to contrast with the reds and yellows of fall.
Do you like to take walks in the fall? Most people head for the trails, but I also like to walk residential neighborhoods – especially historic ones with older homes that feature painted, clapboard siding, like this green Victorian cottage. I considered painting my own house this color at one time.
Red trim perks up an historic white farmhouse. The peak above the arched window wears a bit of fancy trim. I always want to venture inside and explore houses like this. How about you?
Okay – so this isn’t one of the charming cottages, but I couldn’t pass up sharing this quaint little church against a sea of golden leaves. It reminds me of a scene from a fairy tale.
Do pretty fall scenes like this with charming cottages give you the warm fuzzies? They make me want to visit new neighborhoods and see what else there is to explore!
What lovely homes! The answer is yes! I do want to see inside these homes. When I was a small girl I would walk through beautiful neighborhoods with my mother. She would draw my attention to the details in an old door or windows or trim. How could I not love old houses with those fond memories? Thanks reminding me of those fun times.
I agree I like to take walks and look at homes like this. The church picture is so beautiful. We go to Niagara on the Lake as that is only 4 hours from us. It is a beautiful town to walk! Love your blog!!
I went to Good Templar Park this year for the first time. I really enjoyed it.
My husband and I went to Sweden this past June, and I fell in love with it. So many wonderful well-kept colorful homes and gardens. It’s obvious their homes mean a lot to them. I would love to go back again to spend more time exploring this wonderful country.
I love these blogs when you post them and besides going in, to some of the houses, I would love to see the inside of that little church. You could make this longer, I could sit here and look for 15-20 more minutes.Lol!! Thanks.
All so charming! That huge Craftsman on the bluff is amazing and the little church is wonderful. Where is that located? Here in the foothills of the Rockies we are having our first snow…finally after an amazingly long and wonderful fall…and it is coming right down. It’s only 28F, so the perfect “snow making” temperature. Looks very fine and dry so may not add up quickly. We could get up to 10 inches by tomorrow afternoon if we get the predicted maximums.
