Wonderful Wicker Chairs Create a Happy Porch
Are you enjoying the longer, warmer days? It’s so refreshing to wake up with the sun and the song of birds outside. And for many of you, the sound of cicadas can be heard, as well. I haven’t seen any cicadas in our area yet (knock on wood). Just a few towns east however, they’re out in full force. This might motivate you to stay closer to the house – like the front porch where you can seek refuge. When it comes to creating a pretty and happy porch, wicker chairs and furniture are always a sure-bet choice. See today’s collection for inspiration and ideas.
Wicker chairs are a timeless piece of furniture that seamlessly blend functionality with aesthetic appeal. Crafted from woven natural materials such as rattan, willow, bamboo, or from synthetic fibers, wicker chairs have been a popular choice for both indoor and outdoor seating for centuries. Normally we think of white wicker when it comes to the front porch, but a black wicker rocking chair looks so appealing, especially when adorned with red and white patterned cushions.
The term “wicker” itself comes from the Scandinavian word “wika,” meaning to bend, and “viker,” referring to willow. Vintage wicker pieces can be found in antique stores and at flea markets.
The origins of wicker furniture date back to ancient Egypt, where it was used in both royal and common households. The technique of weaving flexible branches and twigs into sturdy furniture items spread through ancient civilizations and remains popular today. There’s something to be said about furniture that stands the test of time.
A pair of charming white wicker rockers contrast with a black, gleaming porch floor. This corner beckons you to get cozy with a glass of iced tea or lemonade on a summer’s day.
One of the primary advantages of wicker chairs is their lightweight nature, making them easy to move and rearrange. Despite their lightness, well-made wicker chairs are remarkably sturdy and can withstand substantial weight and usage.
Wicker chairs come in various styles and designs, from traditional high-backed armchairs to modern minimalist pieces. Here, a striking pair decorate the porch of a slightly worn farmhouse. The diamond pattern on the back of the chairs is especially appealing.
The natural look of wicker blends harmoniously with many decorating styles, enhancing the beauty of rustic, bohemian, and coastal themes. Don’t be afraid to pair natural wicker with white wicker.
Wicker is a great choice for outdoor dining due to its durability. To keep the furniture clean, a quick dusting removes light dirt. For deeper cleaning, simply wash the wicker with a mild soap and water. Make sure you use cushions for outdoor use so they hold up better to the elements.
Today it’s easy to find synthetic wicker furniture made from resin or plastic fibers that possess enhanced durability and resistance to weather conditions. You get the appearance of natural wicker with less maintenance and more resistance to fading, cracking, and mildew. I honestly can’t think of a better furniture choice for a front porch than wicker chairs.
Do you have a favorite from today’s collection?
Nice examples. I love wicker. I have a set of rocking chairs and a little table to put your feet on with a different table between the chairs on one far end of my porch. At the very end I put my ferns there for the summer. In front I have a big flowering cherry tree that hangs down and rhododendrons along that side. I also have three hanging flowering baskets. So it’s pretty private. I love sitting out there after dinner or sometimes in the morning with my coffee. Happy Summer (almost).
I love wicker. It’s so classic and timeless; two of my favorite words. I have used wicker both indoors and outdoors through the years; always loving it. A year or so back, we were blessed with a Brown Jordan (Elegance Collection) Patio dining set and sofa set for our screened porch, Being in a downsized home, I had to sell the wicker set to make room for the Brown Jordan set. As much as I miss the wicker, the vintage Brown Jordan furniture has captured my heart. Hey, a post on that genre of furniture might be noteworthy!
The faded pair with matching table on the old farmhouse porch really make me nostalgic.
