13 Historic Doors That You’ll Love in Popular Alexandria

We’re back to Alexandria on the blog today to see a fine collection of historic doors that you’re sure to love – especially if you’re a bit of a history buff. No two doors are alike and most are a bit ornate or are painted a fun color. I don’t know why they don’t typically design front doors like this anymore. After all, your front door can make a great first impression.

You’ll find doors in almost every color in the popular, thriving town of Alexandria, Virginia. The same can be said of the houses themselves as you’ll see in this post that I shared a couple weeks ago after my trip to Washington D.C.

Here’s a fun bright yellow door dressed up for spring. The white “eyebrow” above the transom window is an interesting detail. The fox door knocker adds a bit of whimsy. A lot of the historic doors in this town have door knockers on them, as opposed to doorbells.

Many of the homes in Alexandria have ornate trim work around the front door, flanked by one or two light sconces. I like the half moon brick step just in front of this grand wooden door.

This area of the country has numerous old townhouses and row houses. On this set of townhouses, the owners treated their doors differently. One with shutters, one without. Even the paneling on the doors is different. I like the cute pineapple knocker on the door at right.

Two layers of navy blue doors greet you at the entrance of this beautiful historic home. The inner door is singular while there’s a set of outer doors that ward off the elements. A topiary tree is always a nice addition next to the stoop.

How about a charming pink front door with a lion knocker made out of bronze? Note the intricate molding over the transom window above the door.

Teal is always a great color choice when you own a red brick home. You might have noticed that most of these historic doors include a mail slot in them. I wonder if the postman still brings mail to the house in his or her big leather pouch.

This mustard yellow door features an eagle knocker and a sunrise pattern in the transom window. The plaque to the left identifies the home as being part of the Historic Alexandria Foundation.

A set of steps leads you up to the double front door of this Alexandria home with its pretty, ornate wrought iron fence.

You can tell an owner takes pride in their home when their entry is well-maintained. This door isn’t as ornate as some of the others, but it’s still attractive in its simplicity.

You’ll find plenty of doors to gardens when you walk around Alexandria. And true to form, they’re also aesthetically appealing.

  1. Thank you Jennifer. ..The doors are stately and beautiful. And at first glance they automatically make the stately houses appear important.

  2. Thank you for another beautiful tour, Jennifer. I think the red doors were my favorite from the group.

  3. You might want to make a correction re the “pineapple” door knocker. It is a pinecone. The shape of a pineapple is different and decorative metal or wood pineapple items always include the vegetation on top.
The pinecone knocker is actually much rarer, but more recent. I like it. All the old doors in historic Alexandria Old Town are beautiful.

  4. The trim work can make a door lovely no matter how plain or what color. I love an arched door or moon-shaped brick steps. Thanks, these were examples of how ornate entrances us to be.

  5. Thank you for the lovely tour. You left me wanting more. I am currently elbow deep in painstakingly refinishing a historic door. This was the motivation I needed. ♥
