A Designer’s Lowcountry Island Retreat Rooted in Charm You’ll Love
Tucked beneath towering pines and surrounded by shimmering marsh views, this Lowcountry island retreat captures everything to love about coastal southern living; breezy porches, soulful antiques, layered patterns, and rooms designed for gathering. Inspired by the natural beauty of the coast and infused with collected character, the designer Nancy Serafini‘s home blends tradition with warmth in a way that feels both timeless and deeply personal. Take a look and get ready to fall in love!

From the outside, the home feels quintessentially Lowcountry (and a little bit Nantucket) with its cedar shingles, deep green trim, and metal roof. Nestled among pines, live oaks, and native grasses, it sits comfortably in the landscape as if it has always belonged there. Nancy and her husband purchased the lot (once owned by Arnold Palmer) in 2015, knowing it would be the perfect sanctuary.

The welcoming foyer opens to a glass-paneled door that frames a shingled porch beyond, instantly connecting indoors and out. A sculptural antique settle and simple woven runner set the tone for a house that honors craftsmanship and history.

In the cozy living room of the Lowcountry island retreat, custom built-ins flank the brick fireplace, showcasing blue-and-white ceramics, books, and greenery. A large painting above the mantel anchors the room and reinforces the home’s connection to Southern landscapes.

Moody teal walls envelop the den, creating a cozy contrast to the brighter main living spaces. Layered textiles in rust and blue warm the room, while the brick fireplace adds texture and a sense of permanence. Note how the trim is the same color as the walls creating the ambiance of comforting hug. Pops of orange are the perfect complementary color.

In the kitchen, creamy cabinetry and dark countertops create a crisp backdrop for a playful geometric tile backsplash in blues and warm ochre. The apron-front sink and vintage-inspired lighting and Berry Patch sign add just the right amount of character.

A trio of timeworn stools lines the kitchen island, inviting guests to linger while meals are prepared. The patterned tile, framed by traditional millwork, adds a handcrafted, collected feel that keeps the white cabinetry from feeling too formal. I adore the whimsical tile in blue and yellow – it puts a smile on your face the moment you see it.

Walls of windows flood this sitting room in the Lowcountry island retreat with soft natural light and frame expansive views of the marsh beyond. Neutral upholstery paired with subtle florals and tailored drapery keeps the space relaxed yet refined. Furniture is arranged to encourage casual conversation.

One of the bathrooms makes a bold statement with gallery-style wallpaper featuring botanical and bird illustrations. Paired with crisp white fixtures and woven baskets below the vanity, the space feels whimsical yet polished.

The screened porch is pure Lowcountry island retreat living with woven wicker seating, cheerful plaid pillows, and expansive views across the water. It’s a space designed for long conversations, morning coffee, and watching the light change over the marsh – such an idyllic spot for enjoying any part of the day.

Going up the staircase, you’ll find a gallery wall of bird prints that echoes the wallpaper seen in the powder room. A striped runner lends color and pattern.

Soft blue walls echo the coastal sky in this serene bedroom retreat. Layered patterned bedding, tailored drapery, and a cozy upholstered chair create a restful space that feels elegant without sacrificing comfort.

A cozy reading corner occupies one end of the bedroom. I love the colors and patterned fabrics that Nancy chose for space with its waterfront view.

Throughout the Lowcountry island retreat, there’s a clear reverence for materials that age gracefully, colors pulled from the surrounding marsh, and rooms designed to embrace both family life and entertaining. It’s a home that captures the magic of the southern east coast: rooted in tradition and open to the breeze.
