A Remarkable Catskills Home Filled with Rustic Character
Set among the wooded hills near Narrowsburg, New York, this older Catskills home has character that comes from embracing age. Rustic stone, wood floors, and vintage furnishings give the interiors plenty of personality. Large windows keep the rooms connected to the beautiful countryside. (All photos by Clay Banks.)
What I especially like about this Catskills home is that its age and imperfections arenโt hidden. Instead, they become part of the design. Old and new pieces mingle easily, and thereโs enough breathing room to appreciate both the architecture of the house and the beautiful setting outside.
A Stone Fireplace Anchors the Living Room
Itโs hard to look anywhere but at the wonderful stone fireplace, with its chunky wood mantel and beautifully irregular stonework. The worn leather chair and unusual pulley-style floor lamp give this corner even more personality.

Behind the leather chair, the wood and white staircase winds its way to the second floor. The simple concrete coffee table is an unexpected modern counterpoint to the stone fireplace and dark wood architectural details.

A wider view shows how the living and dining spaces flow together, with the fireplace acting as a strong visual anchor. The vintage trunk, oversized blue sofa, rustic table, and industrial light fixture create an eclectic mix that feels collected rather than coordinated.

A long reclaimed-wood table and bench make the dining area feel unfussy, especially when you add in mismatched chairs. Most importantly, the large windows turn the changing countryside into the room’s main decoration. It would be a pleasure to enjoy any meal in this space with a view like that.

An open door leading to the small deck makes the home feel larger and reinforces its connection to the outdoors. The old-style map continues the understated collected theme without overwhelming this light-filled corner.

A Simple Country Kitchen for the Catskills Home
The kitchen makes clever use of a relatively modest space, with white cabinetry keeping the room bright beneath the vaulted ceiling. Dark wood floors and the heavy overhead beam bring warmth to all the white, while industrial pendant lights give the room a slightly unexpected edge.

Thereโs nothing overly elaborate about this kitchen, and that’s part of its charm. Shaker-style cabinets, subway tile, stainless-steel appliances, and wood accents create a practical space that feels appropriate for an older country home.

A tiny cafรฉ table tucked beneath the windows creates a wonderful spot for morning coffee while enjoying the wooded view. The weathered orange metal chairs add just enough color and personality to make this little corner memorable.

A Bedroom That Lets the View Take Center Stage
The bedroom continues the home’s mix of old and new with a simple black metal bed, antique-style dresser, vintage trunk, and graphic wool blanket. With windows on three sides, the furnishings can remain minimal because the surrounding landscape supplies so much visual interest. Can you imagine waking up in this room with all that natural beauty outside your Catskills home?

Even the hallway feels thoughtfully connected to the rest of the house, thanks to the dark wood flooring and crisp white trim. Looking toward the bedroom and its large window draws your eye straight through to the rolling hills beyond.

A Bright, Uncomplicated Bathroom
The bathroom combines a traditional dark wood vanity with classic penny tile flooring. The sloped ceiling hints at the home’s age and architecture. The restrained palette keeps the room feeling open and fresh.

Why This Older Home Works So Well
This Catskills home is a good reminder that updating an older house doesnโt mean making everything look new. In fact, much of its charm comes from the contrast between old and new, such as the rough stone fireplace beside a cement coffee table, vintage trunks next to contemporary furniture, and aged wood paired with clean white walls. And then of course, there’s all the windows with those magnificent views! What’s not to love?
