See Inside a Happy Utah Cottage: Combining Past and Present

Some homes feel timeless the moment you step inside; layered, soulful, and quietly confident in their design choices. This Utah cottage by Cindy McCarley Designs and featured in Utah Style & Design, strikes that rare balance between honoring traditional architecture and embracing today’s personality-driven details.

A Kitchen Rooted in Tradition

At first glance, the kitchen reads as traditional and it’s certainly not a cookie-cutter modern farmhouse kitchen. Instead, it leans into a more English-inspired, cottage sensibility with layered finishes, soft color, and an emphasis on craftsmanship. I love every square inch of it!

The custom-colored range anchors the kitchen both visually and functionally. Its rich blue-green finish and substantial brass detailing feel almost European in spirit, lending the room a sense of history and gravitas. Above it, a substantial hood surround keeps the look architectural and tailored, while a simple pot rail layered with copper cookware adds warmth and authenticity.

The large wooden island is a statement piece that can’t be ignored in the middle of it all. More than just a place to cook, this kitchen establishes the design language for the entire house with timeless materials, soft colors, layered patterns, and a respect for traditional forms. This is probably one of my favorite home tours.ย

A classic farmhouse sink sits beneath a brass bridge faucet and a functional plate rack, adding just the right amount of polish. The repetition of plates and bowls creates a clean, rhythmic look. Against the beautifully patterned wallpaper, the shelves become a design feature in their own right.

One of the most striking elements of this kitchen is its color story. Soft sage and blue-green tones appear on the wainscoting, window trim, and range, creating a gentle contrast against the creamy cabinetry and pale stone surfaces. The colors feel calm and collected. Even the use of pattern is impressive. The floral wallpaper is paired with windowpane cafe curtains at the windows and softly marbled stone on the counter tops and back splash. The cream-colored cabinetry provides a spot for the eye to rest.ย

Classic Windsor chairs cuddle up to a small round table in the far corner of the kitchen, creating a wonderful breakfast nook to start the day. Note the deep set windows that add even more character to today’s happy Utah cottage.ย

Beyond the main kitchen, a secondary storage area continues the homeโ€™s layered approach to design. Built-in cabinetry with skirted fabric panels softens the look of closed storage, while wallpapered cubbies add colorful interest. Itโ€™s a charming nod to classic European pantries and sculleries, spaces designed to be practical but never boring.

A Living Room Designed for Comfort

The living room carries continues the homeโ€™s layered, timeless approach, offering a space that feels equally polished and inviting. Soft seating arranged for conversation anchors the space, with a tailored sofa and upholstered chairs. The wallpaper sets off the beautiful deep-set windows.

A Dining Room for Everyday Living

At the center of the dining room sits a classic wooden table surrounded by black Windsor chairs with their recognizable silhouettes. The dining space is situated between the living room and kitchen of the Utah cottage.

The walls are wrapped in a delicate, repeating wallpaper pattern that brings subtle depth to the room. Paired with blue-green painted wainscoting, the effect is cohesive and soft. A small gallery of framed landscape paintings adorns the walls, adding personality. The varied frame finishes feel intentionally imperfect.

A beautifully aged wooden hutch anchors one side of the room, offering both storage and display. The same windowpane curtains from the kitchen are used in dining room, as well, coordinating equally well with a different wallpaper pattern.ย

Inside the hutch, stacks of transferware plates and glassware are shown off against a soft blue interior, turning everyday dishes into decorative elements.

Bedrooms That Feel Calm and Personal

Moving onto the bedrooms, you’ll enjoy more wonderful details throughout the Utah cottage. A vintage dresser tucked into a narrow nook becomes a quiet focal point when paired with landscape art and a simple glass olive jar.ย

In one bedroom, a delicate floral wallpaper sets a serene backdrop for crisp white bedding and simple wood furniture. The pattern feels romantic but not fussy, balanced by clean-lined trim and an uncluttered layout. Warm wood bedposts add a sense of history, while tailored linens keep the room feeling fresh and light.

Beadboard wainscoting is painted soft sage green, matching one of the colors found in the wallpaper. It’s often best to choose your wallpaper first, and then select a paint color from the paper. Striped bedding and a pillow with a small floral print pair beautifully with the patterned walls.ย

Another bedroom leans into cooler tones, with blue wainscoting and coordinating wallpaper that creates a cocoon-like effect. Matching twin beds with turned posts give the space a timeless, almost storybook quality, while layered bedding and subtle pattern mixing keep the room from feeling overly formal.

You’ll find a writing desk in another cubby of the Utah cottage. I love homes that have unexpected turns or coves.ย

A Bathroom That Honors the Homeโ€™s History

In one of the bathrooms, a richly detailed antique vanity anchors the space, its warm wood tones adding depth against crisp white walls. Perhaps the star of the room is the gorgeous round mirror with its intricate trim.ย

From the kitchen through the bedrooms and bath, this Utah cottage by Cindy McCarley Designs tells a consistent story. Itโ€™s a house defined by classic confidence, where pattern is embraced, color is layered gently, and every room feels both personal and enduring. I love it all!
