The Soulful Cottage: An Exciting New Book Giveaway

Happy Monday! I’m excited to announce another amazing book by Fifi O’Neill! The Soulful Cottage is filled with beautiful rooms and ideas for creating the cottage look in your own spaces. Today I’m featuring one of the homes showcased in the book. One of my lucky readers can win a free copy of the book simply by leaving a comment at the end of this post. (Photography by Mark Lohman.)

This charming Woodstock, New York cottage belongs to interior designers Carlos Pagel and Carl Morton. They wanted a light and airy American cottage that reflects a country lifestyle through the use of florals and vintage items.

The cottage living room features built-in cabinetry and soft furnishings like the tufted loveseat and ruffled pillow. A salvaged trunk lends shabby chic appeal with a beautiful vase holding flowering branches.

A sweet kitty poses in front of the stone fireplace gracing the room with its 18-foot-high vaulted ceiling. You’ll see original artwork throughout the home.

It’s no surprise that Carlos and Carl were heavily inspired by designer Rachel Ashwell who brought shabby chic style to the forefront of the decorating world. Cream and white pair with shades of pastels throughout the home, including the cheery kitchen.

I can imagine how much fun it was collecting all the pastel China pieces. It feels like a fresh spring day in the cottage kitchen.

The adjoining dining nook introduces a pair of striped chairs in a vivid burgundy tone. A unique floor treatment is seen in the use of overlapping area rugs.

A gold heart was painted on an old door posing as art in the home’s hallway, mimicking the shape of the top of the little boudoir chair.

Soft stripes grace the walls of one of the romantic bedrooms with its pleasing mix of pastel pillows.

I’m completely smitten by the blue vase on the creamy vintage nightstand. I love its floral appliques.

The details on the lamp are truly impressive and intricate. What a great find! You’ll find numerous treasures like this throughout the pages of The Soulful Cottage.

Another bedroom features a darling wallpaper in one of my favorite colors. The sweet vintage dresser and mirror elevates the space in such a dreamy way. So cute!

The bathroom also features a pretty paper on the wall. The mirror is fantastic and the vanity with rounded edges is unique and appealing.

  1. I love all of Fifi’s books. Her styling and photos are a joy. I look through her books over and over again. This new one looks like no exception and I would love to win a copy.

  2. No massed-produced items here! And it must have been fun to both seek out treasures and to stumble upon yesterday’s sweet finds. The unexpected being joined together makes for a peaceful canvas. And in a seemingly throwaway society this book guides us to appreciate, use and spotlight all things beautiful!!

  3. I would love to be the new owner of The Soulful Cottage. I am hoping to redecorate my vintage Geneva home using florals and vintage with the color scheme of cream and white paired with pastels. Thank you for your wonderful articles.

  4. What a sweet, special cottage. I know that the book is fabulous! And on a separate note, I am so thrilled that I have discovered your blog Jennifer. Where have you been all my life? I look forward to it every day. Keep the inspiration coming.

  5. Jennifer, thank you for continuing to showcase shabby chic and more assessibly decorated homes on your blog. It’s fun to look at stunning, aspirational homes, but it’s even more fun to look at homes that became beautiful through grit and the owner’s creative spirit, not just an abundance of budget resources to complete a project. I am sure whoever wins the book will enjoy it immensely! Leslie

  6. One of the things about looking at and relooking at the photos in decorating books is seeing furniture placement, and how it effects you. Living the scatoma of your own home, seeing but not seeing, gets a little jolt.

Three of the photos made me wonder why the furniture or placement bothered me.
Placing a sofa directly in front of a beautiful stone fireplace, facing away from the fireplace and hiding it seems odd to me, as well as the sofas not facing each other for conversation.

In the first bedroom the placement of the chair under the window impedes the flow around the bed. I would switch the table and chair placement and angle the chair, so it does not look so stark sticking out at right angles in such a soft space.

The chairs in the dining nook are too stark in colour against the soft pastels. I think a mid range aqua blue would reflect the softer blues in the room.

Being a visual person, I love looking, relooking and relooking at decorating books, absorbing ideas, inspiring me to relook at my own surroundings with a new eye.

  7. I already won one of your great, generous giveaways so this comment won’t count for that! Fifi’s work is always sooo inspiring. This wonderful book seems to be more evidence of that. Looks like this book will continue her legacy of creative charm in decorating. And you, my dear, are equally inspiring and talented. Thank you.

  8. What a lovely home! I have always admired Fifi’s work. Her designs are lovely, comforting and genteel. Homes you can live in! Thank you for sharing her work!

  9. Everything is so pretty and cozy feeling in this home. I love her style. So very nice of her to give a great book like this to one lucky winner. I hope it’s me !

  10. Oh my goodness, what a jewel box. This evoked feelings: (1) I feel like I just hung out with my favorite girls and my ‘girly’ cup is overflowing; (2) I feel like I time traveled back to a grandmother or aunt’s house that smelled like cookies, where you had the best nap of your life and you leave feeling loved and adored. ♥♥♥

  11. I love the touches of pastel accents in this lovely cottage. Just what I need to bring a bit of early spring in our home. Expecting some snow here in N.C. this week but I can still bring a bit of spring inside.

  12. The heart on the old door and the dish collection was awesome. This style always appeals to me regardless of what is current. To me it is timeless.

  13. I’m a vintage gal through and through. I always look forward to your posts but I especially enjoyed this one. I’m in Michigan so we are both experiencing the same bitter cold right now. I love to hunker down and read and look through decor books. This one looks amazing.

  14. I am new to this FiFi’s blog but am so excited to find it! I have always loved the cottage look but more along the line of rustic cottage looks. It brings so much warmth and nostalgia to today’s cookie cutter looks; I love the originality of the looks in this lovely rustic cottage. My parents own a shop filled with fantastic finds similar to the looks here and I always enjoyed decorating with my Mom in the shop. She has since passed but I never lost the excitement of cottage decor! I am now a new fan of yours!

  15. Soft beautiful colors. The aesthetics are just gorgeous. However, you should also have a little schnauzer sitting next to that precious kitty! Eileen

  16. When I look at the kitchen, two words come to mind. Cheerful and sweet. The living room looks very comfy while still being very attractive. The bookshelves and stone fireplace are amazing. It’s a very sweet looking cottage overall.
