Tour a Sensational English Cottage Garden in Oxfordshire

One of my favorite garden styles is the classic English cottage garden. They’re lush, overflowing, and just a little unruly, yet somehow perfectly balanced. Today’s beautiful garden tour from HollandGreen Landscapes in Oxfordshire captures that timeless charm and feels as though you’ve stepped into the pages of a Jane Austen novel. Every winding path, fragrant bloom, and layered planting is a feast for the senses.

Designed for a young family, this award-winning landscape is filled with vibrant color thanks to a succession of summer-blooming perennials. In this view you’ll spot airy white cosmos, rich purple salvia, and vivid magenta persicaria, also known as knotweed, though I much prefer its charming old-fashioned nickname, “kiss-me-over-the-garden-gate.”

As beautiful as the English cottage garden is on its own, the charming stone-and-brick home behind it makes the scene even more enchanting. Together, the house and garden create the kind of timeless setting that feels straight out of the English countryside.

The country home features a swimming pool framed by drifts of blooming cosmos and salvia, with sweeping views of the Oxfordshire countryside stretching into the distance. It’s the kind of peaceful, idyllic setting that’s hard to imagine ever wanting to leave.

A closer look at the pool house reveals a charming space for sheltered alfresco dining, where leisurely meals can be enjoyed while taking in the beauty of the surrounding garden.

Purple salvia is a magnet for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators, making it a wonderful addition to any sunny garden. Its rich violet blooms create a beautiful contrast when paired with airy white cosmos.

Here’s a closer look at the vibrant magenta persicaria. Its airy flower spikes pair beautifully with the upright purple blooms of salvia, creating a colorful combination that’s a hallmark of the cottage garden style.

A vintage garden cart rests beneath a pear tree, waiting to be filled with fresh-cut blooms gathered from the surrounding flower beds. It’s a simple detail that adds to the garden’s timeless cottage charm.

Joe Pye weed makes its appearance in the English cottage garden. This is an easy-to-grow herbaceous plant with a sweet vanilla scent. I have it planted in my rain garden along with iris. When the weather warms up, I’ll share how to make a rain garden. They’re great for helping to manage storm water in your yard.

This view of the garden showcases vibrant magenta dahlias alongside cheerful orange helenium, a late-summer bloomer that’s often mistaken for coneflower. I love adding splashes of orange among pink and purple flowers. It creates a warm, lively contrast that really makes the garden come alive.
