Winter Decorating and a Tale of Two Pillows

I find myself craving two things when decorating my home this time of year. Natural elements and the color blue. I turn to blue after all the reds and greens typically used for Christmas. The desire for natural elements comes from not being able to enjoy them outdoors in our frozen world. So it's no surprise that winter decorating in my family includes both these things. (This post contains affiliate links.)   Normally the first thing I … [Read more...]

Color in the Family Room

Fall is in the air. Can you smell it? Driving down the country roads with the windows open, I can smell the harvest of wheat and sweet corn. In my garden, the scent of tomatoes and marigolds fills the air. While I was tending my flowers and vegetables, I noticed the zinnias aren't blooming as profusely so I snipped a bunch and brought them inside to add some color in the family room.   The colors of late summer are so vibrant and … [Read more...]

Summer Blues in My Farmhouse Family Room

Summer is hot and humid here in Illinois so the color blue is perfect for cooling things down in our farmhouse family room. Blue also lends itself to a coastal theme which I'm slowly adding to the room. I'm also adding beach style to my son's old bedroom and will share that with you when it's all done. For now, I've added a few more touches of blue to the family room. Light and airy is the look I'm going for in my farmhouse family room. Blue and … [Read more...]

New Spring Pillows in the Family Room

People often ask why I like to decorate with white, and the answer is simple. Besides the fact that I love the color white and feel it always looks fresh and clean ... you can easily change up the look and feel of a white room from season to season by adding beautiful color and pattern with pillows and textiles. I recently added a touch of color in the family room. I was actually shopping for something specific for the kitchen and wandered into … [Read more...]

New Year, New White Sectional

Happy New Year!! Hopefully you didn't party too much last night. During my 2014 Christmas home tour I shared my new white sectional, but I didn't share much of the background story with you. For months I had been thinking about getting a new sectional. When it comes to furniture, I'm always shy to pull the trigger. I don't know why. It's just the way I'm wired. But when Kris at Junk Chic Cottage emailed me and asked if I wanted to buy her … [Read more...]

Summer Decorating in the Family Room

Once summer rolls around I like to lighten up my home decor and this year I've been in the mood to add color. I recently added some fun color to my front porch and like it so much better now. The next room to get some fresh summer decorating was my family room. Can you tell the main thing I changed in here? If you guessed the wall clock, you're absolutely right! It became the inspiration for the rest of the room changes.   I spied the … [Read more...]

Small Space Living Rooms

Lately I've turned a critical eye to both my living room and family room. Neither room is particularly large, but they're adjacent to each other with a fairly large doorway so the spaces feel spacious. I thought I would use today's "Humpday with Houzz" to do a little research and find small space living rooms that I like for future inspiration. Farmhouse Living Room by Atlanta Architects & Designers Historical Concepts I've loved this room … [Read more...]

Changes for the Family Room

A little over a year ago, I found the wonderful world of blogging. I was amazed at how many fabulous home and decor blogs were out there. Two of my early faves were Mod Vintage Life and Aiken House and Gardens. From there I found others and was inspired to start my own blog. Blogging is a way for me to hold myself accountable with home projects. In order to create a blog post, you need something to blog about. Each week keeps me motivated around … [Read more...]

The Campbell Street House

If you follow my blog, you know I like to take exterior photos of historic homes in the area and give ya'll a tour. Recently I found that one of those historic homes in Geneva is now up for sale and I was able to grab some interior photos (source of photo if not mine is Miscella Real Estate). This is the historic house on Campbell Street that I love. It's not extravagant, rather, it has simple clean lines and pretty urns out front. All … [Read more...]

Creating a Crafting Cabinet

I've had this IKEA computer cabinet that I no longer use, so I turned it into a crafting cabinet. You might recognize this cabinet. It's the Ikea cabinet I made over with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. You can read about its makeover here. The inside of the cabinet got a makeover as well as the outside. I lined the interior with book pages and a few graphics to add color and interest. I also added book pages to the insides of the doors. You know … [Read more...]

Family Room Clock Makeover

I love clocks. The bigger, the better. About a year ago I found a large wall clock on sale (half price) at The Little Traveler. The finish was a little too dark for my taste so I lightened it up with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. This is what the clock looks like today. This is what it looked like when I brought it home from The Little Traveler. Nothing wrong with the color ... I simply decided I wanted a lighter shade. I'm going for a softer … [Read more...]

Lilacs and Vintage Mirrors

After a long winter's nap, I find myself craving fresh flowers and lots of natural light. Whatever I can clip from the garden makes its way into the house. Shades aren't drawn until absolutely necessary. And this year, I'm collecting mirrors in order to bounce light around the room. But first, the flowers ... Lilacs smell divine! And you only need a few branches for a full bouquet. Awww. Baby Kitty adds a little softness to the spring … [Read more...]
