A Stunning Seaside Home Transformed: From Old to Chic

Step into a stunning renovation of a shingle-style seaside home nestled in Manchester‑by‑the‑Sea, Massachusetts. Spearheaded by OLSON LEWIS + Architects and completed in 2023, this coastal masterpiece blends the integrity of its 1896 heritage with fresh, modern sensibilities.

A Heritage Home Reimagined

Originally built in 1896, the house boasts iconic gambrel rooflines, white‑painted trim, and stately Shingle‑style details. Despite uneven, creaking floors, the quirks the homeowners cherished, the renovation honored the home’s character while infusing it with livability and light.

Design Philosophy: Preservation with Purpose

The transformation was rooted in a deep respect for original craftsmanship. While structural updates like Marvin windows ensured efficiency, they remained faithful to the home’s turn of the century aesthetic. Interior elements such as original moldings, built ins, and wide plank hardwood floors were restored and subtly enhanced.

Living & Dining: Airy Coastal Vibes

The home’s living areas unfold with ease. The great room features built in bookcases and window benches that frame scenic vistas while promoting family interaction. The dining room, lined with arched built ins and paneled walls, connects effortlessly to a screened porch—ideal for breezy morning breakfasts or summer entertaining.

The dining room serves as a graceful bridge between indoors and out, offering a seamless connection to the screened porch through a set of elegant French doors. Lined with classic white millwork and softly arched built-ins, the space feels both refined and welcoming. Natural light pours in during the day, while in the evening, the room glows with the warmth of coastal-inspired fixtures and candlelight.

A Kitchen that Invites

At the heart of the seaside home, the kitchen is flooded with natural light thanks to a custom oriel window extension that surrounds the sink and cabinetry on three sides. This creatively maximizes both view and daylight. The spacious island provides both workspace and gathering space, and the palette of creamy cabinetry and marble surfaces reinforces the gentle coastal narrative.

Entertaining with Ease: Butler’s Pantry / Home Bar

Adjacent to the kitchen, the butler’s pantry serves a dual purpose—as sophisticated prep space and welcoming wet bar. Streamlined shaker cabinetry, undermount sink, and elegant finishes infuse practicality with beach house charm.

Bedrooms: Comfort & Character

The primary bedroom in the seaside home blends timeless architecture with a calm, curated aesthetic. Crisp white walls and matching trim create a serene backdrop, while the black-painted floor adds bold contrast and a touch of drama. A white fireplace with a black brick surround anchors the room with classic elegance, topped by a vintage-style mirror and a curated set of books. The cozy bed, dressed in soft whites and accented with a geometric throw, invites rest and relaxation.

  1. I live North of Boston in a small town in a center entrance colonial built around 1920. I love the period charm of older homes. The one you have featured near me in the in Manchester-by-the-Sea is beautiful. The town is postcard quiant and offers so much with a small town feel and a grand coast line.
