Are You Ready to Decorate with Mustard Yellow?
Decorating experts predict richer colors for 2020 and mustard yellow, or some variation of it, tends to be on everyone’s trending list for the New Year!
Mustard yellow is such a versatile color. It pairs so well with dark, saturated hues.

But it can also hold its own against vibrant colors. It has the intensity needed to stand up to bold tones.
Mustard yellow can also be soft and feminine. It’s not at all overpowering in this light-filled eat-in kitchen.
You’ll find the color used quite often in historic homes because it was one of the first paint colors developed. If you’ve ever been to Monticello, you might have been surprised to find that Thomas Jefferson painted his dining room a bright yellow, better known as Chrome Yellow.

If you’re not a huge fan of mustard yellow, try adding it in small amounts like a chair, pillows, or blankets. You’ll find it looks great with almost any color – especially gray and blue.
In addition to being popular with the colonists, yellow is also one of three colors seen in Paleolithic drawings (which also include red and black).
This sunny shade looks great in any room of the house and is a great way to brighten a space during the gray days of winter.

Not a fan for my home but in the homes you showed it looks quite attractive. I do love the dark navy and other deep shades of paint they are favoring this coming year.
Hi Kathy! I like the darker shades too, which is unusual because I’ve always been drawn to lighter shades and pastels.
Isn’t there some decorating rule that you can’t use a color if it’s the second time around in your lifetime? Just kidding.
It does look good in your photos.
Yes, yes, yes! I’ve never stopped using yellow and two primary pieces of furniture in my living are painted a color I believe was called Palomino. I’m so relieved. I thought I saw that Pantonne’s color of the year was a blue. I am just not a “Blue Person.”
Definitely not for me.
Yellow and any hue of yellow is a color I have never decorated with until this year. I added a few yellow accessories to 2 bedrooms and I’m still debating whether I like it or not. It’s certainly not a favorite color of mine, but I do like the fact that it’s something different for a change.
About 35 years ago I decided to paint my family room walls a buttery yellow to background my use of blue and white in our cottagey sofa, chairs and my chinoiserie decor pieces. My Atlanta decorator cousin said not to do it because yellow walls tend to eventually become depressing. 😳 Well I did it anyway and every time I walked into those rooms it made me happy.!!! I’m not a fan of mustard yellow but that brick bedroom was WAY COOL.
I did at one time have my living room and kitchen painted yellow but now they are gray tones, i do like yellow but prefer it to pillows and other decor. I did enjoy all the rooms you showed and will have to dig through my pictures of Monticello to see that kitchen, thanks.
Too much reminder of Harvest Gold & Avacado Green! No thanks! But I’ve had a couple pretty yellow kitchens…more lemony/buttery/daffodil yellows.
No yellow for me. I agree with the person above – I lived through Harvest Gold. I’ve always found that using the color yellow required that everything else needed to be pretty much decor/color coordinated perfect in order to carry it off and not have it look random. just my opinion, of course ……
I love it! It’s a happy color and I’ve always incorporated it in several rooms in my homes. I especially like this year’s version, “saffron”.
To all who say they are not fans of yellow, I suggest trying a couple of yellow pillows, a great yellow vase or even just a bunch of yellow roses. I guarantee you will smile every time you look at them!
Yay! We are fans of yellow, and we plan to use a mustard yellow in our powder room the same way it’s used in Brian Branton’s Federal townhouse in Old Town Alexandria, VA. I’m so glad color is returning to the design arena. I am so tired of all grey and white. 🙂
Does this mean Olive Green is not far behind? LOL! I love how colors from our past come back, but always just a little more stylish and used in such attractive ways! Love the pictures and ideas and I’m not even a yellow fan!
