New England Farmhouse Proves Grandmillennial Style Is Here to Stay
Set in the Boston suburbs, this classic New England farmhouse embraces a fresh Grandmillennial style that blends warmth, charm, and nostalgic character. The expansive home features interiors designed to feel cohesive yet full of unique personality from room to room. A folksy primary color palette, smaller-scale rooms, and abundant texture give this timeless residence an inviting ambiance.
One look at the porch assures you of the custom details you’ll find inside. An oval window flanked by a metal lantern with a warm wood ceiling overhead gives a hint at the warm and interest waiting for you when you cross the threshold.
The living room blends classic architecture with layered, inviting textures. A steeply pitched ceiling clad in white-painted planks draws the eye upward to a bold, double-tiered iron chandelier. The crisp white fireplace surround, paired with a slate-toned hearth, anchors the room in timeless elegance.
Patterned drapery, a staple of Grandmillennial style, frames the windows, echoing the vibrant upholstery of the armchairs. A tufted leather ottoman serves as both a coffee table and a focal point, set atop a geometric rug that unifies the seating arrangement. Each element, from the mix of painted and upholstered furniture to the collected accents and owl prints, creates a balance of refinement and warmth.
The kitchen carries a crisp, fresh aesthetic with a nod to tradition. White cabinetry reaches to the ceiling, creating a clean backdrop for the patterned tile backsplash, which offers a handcrafted, old-world feel. The adjacent sunny breakfast nook features a wood dining table surrounded by upholstered chairs and dressed with a blue-and-white floral roman shade, reinforcing the home’s harmonious color palette. Warm wood flooring throughout adds continuity and grounds the airy design.
A navy-blue island with shapely turned legs and scalloped-upholstered stools introduces contrast and visual weight. Overhead, three lantern-style pendants in black metal tie in the room’s traditional elements while adding architectural presence.
In the study, deep green millwork envelops the space, gives Grandmillennial style a rich, cocoon-like atmosphere. The built-in bookcases and wainscoting contrast beautifully with the lighter walls and white-planked vaulted ceiling. A vintage-inspired wooden desk anchors the center of the room, paired with plush seating that invites long reading sessions. Natural woven shades filter the daylight, while an oriental rug injects layered color and pattern underfoot. The gold-detailed green pendant overhead provides a warm, intimate glow, perfectly suited to the room’s quiet sophistication.
The laundry room features cabinetry painted Off Black by Farrow and Ball while open shelving showcases some of my favorite collectibles – white ironstone and enamelware pitchers. The flooring is a custom pattern by designer Katie Rosenfeld using penny and hex tiles.
A custom newel posts commands attention while custom molding frames the winding staircase. A traditional bachelor’s chest with a curved front creates a base for a stunning white orchid arrangement.
Styled with a curated mix of old and new books, mismatched wooden boxes, and time-worn baskets, built-in shelving on the staircase landing feels layered and personal. Overhead, Farrow & Ball’s Borrowed Light softens the ceiling, while a Missoni Home rug adds modern energy.
The bedroom is enveloped Grandmillennial style with an iconic floral chintz by Blithfield, creating a soft, enveloping effect at the windows and on the inviting chaise lounge. A windowpane woolen throw adds another layer of textile to the cozy corner.
Floral wallpaper makes its appearance in the bathrooms, dressed in soft blues and a lightly patterned floor. The reflection in the mirror reveals a transom window by the doorway and a large window that allows natural light to wash the room.
True to Grandmillennial style, a blue and white floral wallpaper pattern envelopes the claw foot tub and walk-in shower. Plantation shutters can be opened or closed at the window for privacy.
