Barn Doors: Farmhouse Style Ideas

home decor March 19, 2020

Farmhouse style is still popular and probably will be for awhile. There are many ways to add the farmhouse look to your home, but today I’m focusing on barn doors that I think you’ll love.

When I think of barn doors, the above is what I envision. A flat planked door on a roller that allows you to easily slide the door open and closed.

A more modern example has windows at the top to allow more light to flow between these two rooms.

There are two pairs of sliding doors in this living space. One set is painted cream, the other is painted red. Sliding barn doors are a great option for closet doors. They don’t swing out into the room requiring extra space.

This pair of barn doors do double duty. They hide the pantry and serve as chalkboards for family messages or grocery lists.

A barn door is perfect for a kitchen pantry. Opening it wide allows you easy access to dishes and sundry items.

Keep in mind, a barn door doesn’t have to slide. When you don’t have enough wall for a rolling door, just use it like a typical hinged door.

Can you find the door in this kitchen?  It blends right in with the planked walls!

I love how this kitchen incorporates a chalkboard style door to hide items on shelves in the breakfast nook.

And finally, one of my favorite uses of barn doors is to hide a TV!  Unfortunately I don’t have the wall space to do this in my own home, but I sure do love it!

Love the barn doors….I have seen them used in so many homes now and they area showing up in builders’ mode homes lately..such a great alternative to the pocket door!

Barn doors will never in a million years take the place in my heart reserved for pocket doors. I know my opinion will not be popular, but I find most of them offensive due to the fact that their size, along with the accompanying hardware, draw attention from the rest of the room. Single doors are not quite as offensive, but for example, in the last photo above, the built-ins and sleek television are part of the room’s decor, while the large, flat expanse of barn doors, especially when closed, dominate that entire end of the room. But, as I always add, this is just one person’s opinion …..

I’m with you – I do prefer pocket doors over barn doors. And I get what you mean – that they can dominate a room. You just don’t find pocket doors as much any more and they’re such a space saver!

I ordered, and received my kit to hang a sliding door. I was not sure what I want the door to look like. Thanks to you, I now have many great ideas. Thanks for sharing.

I’m definitely a fan! I’m on the hunt for an older door for my pantry. But with this CoVid debacle I’m temporarily sidelined.

Hi Nancy – you’re in Illinois, right? Looks like we’ll all be hunkered down for a couple of weeks. Stay safe!
