Fall in Love With This Cozy Southern Living Dream Home

Nestled in the foothills of North Carolinaโ€™s Blue Ridge Mountains, the 2020 Southern Living Idea House by Buchanan Construction is a stunning example of how traditional Southern architecture can blend effortlessly with fresh, modern comforts. From its clean-lined farmhouse exterior to the carefully layered interiors, every inch of the dream home is designed for easy living, natural connection, and relaxed elegance.

A Warm Welcome: The Exterior

The exterior of the home speaks in classic Southern vernacular. A crisp white board-and-batten faรงade is paired with a standing-seam metal roof, while deep porches wrap around the home to invite gathering and quiet morning coffee alike. Simple landscaping frames the structure with native grasses and stonework that echo the surrounding mountains, immediately setting a peaceful tone.

The Dream Home Kitchen: Functional Beauty

The kitchen is a showstopper in its own rightโ€”beautiful yet highly functional. White perimeter cabinets are paired with natural wood on the island, creating a mix of materials that feels intentional but unfussy. Open shelving above the counters allows for display of pottery and dishware, reinforcing the homeโ€™s understated farmhouse vibe.

Wide-plank European oak floors in a natural โ€œinvisibleโ€ finish run throughout the space, grounding the design with a soft texture thatโ€™s both durable and timeless.ย

Brass hardware and aged finishes add depth without being flashy, and a large farmhouse sink under a wall of windows overlooks the backyard greenery.

You’ll even find a bit of rustic, farmhouse appeal with a weathered, rolling table, a lace curtain under an apron sink, and drying rods for kitchen towels. It doesn’t get much homier than this.ย

Anchored by a rustic wood table, the dining room invites lingering meals and lively conversation. Surrounded by large windows that bathe the space in natural light, it feels open and connected to the surrounding landscape.

The Sunroom: Light, Airy, and Grounded

The vaulted sunroom is a special gathering place in today’s dream home. With soaring ceilings and a wall of windows that overlook the woods, the space is flooded with natural light. A large stone fireplace provides both warmth and rustic charm, while exposed beams draw the eye upward. Whether used as a reading nook or informal gathering spot, the sunroom extends the living space and blurs the lines between indoors and out.

The Library: Small Space, Big Character

One of the homeโ€™s most charming features is the libraryโ€”a smaller, more intimate room designed for quiet moments. Outfitted with built-in shelves, itโ€™s the kind of space that feels immediately comforting. A leather couch and chair provide a spots to curl up with a book on a rainy day.

The Bedrooms: Calm and Collected

Each bedroom in this dream home is designed as a restful retreat. In the primary suite, a canopied bed creates a peaceful atmosphere. The room feels both serene and tactile, with an historic-patterned wallpaper lending warmth and interest.ย

Outdoor Living: Made for the Mountains

Perhaps one of the most striking features of the home is its connection to the outdoors. A largeย  porch spans the back of the house, complete with comfortable seating for lazy afternoons or evening gatherings. Beyond that, a stone patio and fire pit offer yet another space to take in the mountain air.

  1. A beautiful home in a beautiful location. For some reason, wasn’t as smitten with the kitchen as the other rooms. But it was still a wonderful kitchen. Enjoyed the wallpaper they used in bedrooms. Very pretty.
