Simple Fall Decor Ideas for the Family Room

fall decorating, home decor September 24, 2019

We had a super rainy weekend which didn’t make me happy because I have four new evergreen trees waiting to be planted and it was much too wet. I didn’t feel like going anywhere so I thought of some simple fall decor ideas for the family room and got to work. (This post contains affiliate links.)

Simple Fall Decor Ideas in the Family Room

Last week I shared my nature inspired fall decorating in the sitting room and dining room. I opted to keep things a bit simpler in the family room.

When I made the decision to paint this room in Mole’s Breath by Farrow and Ball, I committed to creating a moodier vibe in this space. The only thing left to be done in here is choose a new rug and new window treatments. I think I’m going to get the same bamboo blinds as seen in my daughter Bridget’s family room. They’ll add a nice organic texture.

On the coffee table is a large round metal tray at my favorite deli, Deane’s in Geneva. In addition to the best sandwiches, they sell farmhouse items – like the amazing Mason Cash bowls that I love. I tucked a snake plant into the tray along with a handful of adorable baby boo pumpkins. Adding a few pumpkins is perhaps the easiest of fall decor ideas. And look at that crusty clay pot!

Snake plant – aka sansavieria – is super easy to grow – for those of you with brown thumbs. I love its architectural element. It’s great for adding a little height to a space.

Remember the dark brown cow painting that used to be in this room next to my architectural print of the train station in Paris? I moved him into my sitting room and found an amazing evergreen tree print to replace him on this wall. The tree is in keeping with my theme of bringing the outside in.

I did pick up a few new pillows for the family room from yet another favorite local store – Cocoon. I’m a firm believer in local shopping – even if it’s the local Pottery Barn.

Did you know that if you order something from a store’s website but pick it up in-store, the store doesn’t get credit for the sale? The online store is your local store’s biggest competitor even if it’s the same company! So now I take the time to actually go to Pottery Barn to buy something, and if they don’t have it in the store, I have the store order it for me. Just my small contribution to keeping local people employed.

The pillows and throw add just a touch of seasonal color to my moody family room. Since it was raining so hard over the weekend, we watched a few scary movies in here with the lights off. Have you seen The Conjuring?

So there you have it for simple fall decor ideas – baby boo pumpkins, colorful pillows and throws, and you’re good to go!

The amount of change in your family room is just the right amount, so far as I’m concerned. I’m not a big seasonal decorator, so the pillows, throw and a couple of baby pumpkins are perfect. Also, you have inspired me to be plant shopping whenever I’m out and about, and I’ve added 2 large plants to empty spaces. I’m now looking at smaller plants for accent. My home is shady, so not everything works, but I’m up for trial and error.

Hi Pat! I’m so happy that you’re adding plants to your home! Be forewarned – it can become addictive. So far, I’ve found pothos to be the easiest plant to grow. Although I think my new snake plant might be even easier. I’d love to know what kind of plants you’ve recently added!

    Hi, Jennifer!

I’m catching up on my blog reading today, and I absolutely love all of your fall decorated rooms. I’m slowly trying to ease out of the all the oranges and use more organic materials, attempting to use what I have in new ways. Everything I saw in your house was totally inspiring!

Thank you, Judy! I found a book by Selina Lake about decorating with nature and loved everything in it. It’s so organic and earthy and the style really speaks to me. I’m going to feature it (with a book giveaway) in the very near future. 🙂
