Favorite Christmas Decorating Ideas

Have I told you how anxious I am to share my Christmas decor with you? The holiday decorating is done and photos have been taken. I’m waiting until next week to share what I’ve done, but I’m really in the Christmas spirit and feel the need to share something festive. So I’ve rounded up some of my favorite Christmas decorating ideas from years past to hopefully inspire you as your deck your halls.

Snowy Christmas Villages

My favorite Christmas mantel ever is from last year when I used $5 wooden birdhouses from Michael’s store to create a snowy village. Wooden Scandinavian people and mini Christmas decorations completed the look.

I gave this village to my daughter who now has it on display in her home. Her young son loves it and says “no-no” when he sees it because he knows he’s not supposed to play with it. I’m assuming that must be torture for him.

Christmas Printables

Last year I made little houses from construction paper and a few craft supplies. You can download the Christmas village printable for free.

Another fun and festive holiday printable is this collection of Christmas graphics. I framed them and used them for my holiday mantel a couple years ago. You could also make gift tags with them.

Vintage Christmas Figurines

I’m a huge fan of paper clay figurines and love the few vintage Christmas figures that I’ve collected. There’s something about them that captures my heart whenever I see them. They’re hard for me to resist.

Christmas Stairway

My stairway is a little weird in that there’s no railing on the outside. There’s just that single newel post at the bottom. I do like the window at the foot of the stairs and always decorate it for Christmas with garland or ornaments, like I did for last year’s Christmas home tour.

And I usually add some type of adornment on the bottom few stairs that can be seen – like a votive candle in a frosted mason jar.

Pine Cone Christmas Crafts

People like to include pine cones in their Christmas decorating. They’re free and have so many uses. My favorite pine cone craft project is this easy-to-make pine cone garland.

Bottle Brush Trees

Can a person ever have too many bottle brush trees? I don’t think so. One of my favorite Christmas decorating ideas is to use these festive holiday trees in a variety of ways. Like tucking them inside a box …

Or setting one slightly askew in a miniature trophy.

Ornaments on Display

Keep some of your vintage ornaments off the tree and put them proudly on display in a wooden dough bowl.

If you don’t have a wooden bowl, use a mixing bowl from your kitchen!

Christmas Tree Garland

And finally, here’s my favorite holiday garland that I put on my Christmas tree two years ago. It’s just a simple paper chain but I think it’s so pretty. I may have to bring it back out next Christmas.

  1. Hi Jennifer,
Every picture was a joy, thank-you for sharing your ideas. I scrolled through Paige’s too, and they were also lovely.

  2. You really have a gift when it comes to displaying decorations. I am thinking about making the pine cone garland. Do you think I can use glue instead of Mod Podge? Thanks for all of the sweet ideas and inspiration. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
