Why an Off-Grid Home Is the Ultimate Interior Design Masterpiece

When most people imagine an off-grid home, they picture rustic cabins with bare essentials. Starlight Farm, the country property that’s Sarah Richardson’s home, proves that self-sufficient living can be stylish and luxuriously comfortable. Every room of this home reflects thoughtful decorating choices that marry beauty with practicality, creating a retreat that feels timeless, inviting, and connected to the surrounding landscape. Take the tour and you’re sure to find decorating ideas for your own spaces! Robinson Residential Design collaborated on the project.

An Off-Grid Home Built for Family

Perched on a remote hilltop less than two hours from Toronto, Starlight Farm was conceived as Sarahโ€™s โ€œforever homeโ€ for her growing family and, from day one, was meant to feel intimately connected to its natural surroundings. From breaking ground in June 2016 to moving in nine months later, the project was captured on Sarah Off the Grid, a television series that documented everything from solar system design to interior styling.

A Palette That Echoes Nature

The foundation of this off-grid home decorating scheme is its color palette. Interiors are anchored in warm neutralsโ€”soft creams, earthy taupes, pale graysโ€”that reflect the surrounding countryside. Instead of bold statement colors, the house embraces tones borrowed from the rolling fields and wooded hills just outside its windows.

This quiet palette gives Sarah Richardson’s home its serene atmosphere, while also providing flexibility for layering in textures, art, and collected pieces. The result is a backdrop that feels enduring and connected to nature, rather than tied to fleeting trends.

Kitchen: Practical Beauty

The kitchen balances hardworking function with decorative elegance. Soft gray cabinetry pairs with warm brass hardware and crisp white subway tile, creating a palette that feels timeless and serene. Natural light floods in through tall windows, brightening both the work area and the cozy breakfast nook tucked into the corner.

A marble โ€œrugโ€ inlay at the sink and tailored pendant lighting elevate the design, while simple artwork and fresh greenery keep the space approachable and lived-in. The views from the off-grid home kitchen are unbeatable.ย

This cozy corner of the kitchen, with its wood-burning stove, patterned armchairs, and rustic side table, creates a warm spot perfect for morning coffee or unwinding by the fire. I love the idea of creating a comforting spot like this in the kitchen.ย

Separating the kitchen from the dining space is a clever use of cabinetry that is as functional as it is beautiful. Painted in a soft gray, the built-ins provide storage and display while creating a subtle boundary between the two rooms.

Dining: Rustic Simplicity in the Off-Grid Home

The dining room is a showpiece of rustic elegance layered with modern detail. A long farmhouse-style table takes center stage, its weathered surface flanked by woven rattan chairs topped with soft cushions for added comfort. Overhead, the ceiling is a charmingly unique decorative statement, featuring geometric millwork and a striking light fixture that blends vintage character with contemporary lines.

Large windows in the adjoining living room frame sweeping views of the property, making the landscape itself an added decorative element in this open space. The rattan dining chairs are similar to those I initially purchased for my own entryway.

Sunroom Retreat

The sunroom is a bright yet intimate space in the off-grid home, designed for relaxation and connection to the outdoors. Wrapped in windows, the room is bathed in natural light and offers sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. A built-in bench, topped with neutral cushions and an array of patterned pillows, creates the perfect perch for lounging with a book or enjoying morning coffee. Layered texturesโ€”from soft linen to cozy shearlingโ€”add comfort and warmth, while Moroccan leather poufs and a rustic wood table lend global character.ย

Soft Tones and Texture

The laundry room, with its fresh cabinetry and woven storage baskets, feels bright and cheerful, while just across the hall, a painted stairway in soft blue adds a playful pop of color that connects the homeโ€™s practical spaces with its charming decorative details.

Master Bedroom: Calm and Restful

The master bedroom in the off-grid home is a true retreat, where softness and simplicity set the tone. Neutral linens, layered quilts, and wool throws create depth and warmth without relying on busy patterns. Pale draperies filter natural light, adding to the serene atmosphere. An adjoining sitting room, complete with fireplace, creates the ultimate ensuite experience.

Decorating for an Off-Grid Home

Because the house is off-the-grid, every decorating choice had to account for longevity and sustainability. Durable textiles, classic finishes, and low-maintenance materials ensure the home is as practical as it is pretty. The decorating embraces simplicity and restraint, proving that off-grid living doesnโ€™t require compromiseโ€”it can be chic, layered, and timeless.

  1. So fun to see what Sarah Richardson is doing these days. I always enjoyed her television show. Her new house decor is a little gray for me, but has some very interesting details and I enjoyed revisiting her previous house…thanks for providing that link…those colors are more to my liking.
