Home Decorating Changes from 2019 and What’s to Come!

Today I’m joining a group of bloggers to review home decorating changes from 2019 and what we plan to do in the New Year. My style shifted from cool shabby chic farmhouse (is there such a thing?) to a warmer modern country look.

 

Let’s start with January when I found a new rug for my sitting room. I love the warmth it adds!

 

A big change came to my dining room in February when I painted the walls above our board and batten in Downtown by Benjamin Moore. The color fluctuates between light brown/gray and earthy green depending on the time of day.

 

I must’ve been somewhat restless during the month of February because that’s also when I got bold and painted the family room a gorgeous, dark shade of gray – better known as Mole’s Breath by Farrow and Ball.

 

One thing always leads to another when it comes to home decorating. So once I painted the family room, I wanted a new sectional sofa. I bought the used white shabby chic sectional (below) four years ago, so I figure I deserved a new one.

 

Plus I was having a heckuva time keeping the white one clean and kept it covered most of the time. And that was a struggle because I was always having to tidy up the makeshift slipcovers.

I love the new sectional with its ease of care and timeless appeal. I featured it in my spring home tour back in March, and you’ll note I removed the drapes to keep the room from looking too heavy.

 

March was also the month when I painted my vintage mantel in Wrought Iron by Benjamin Moore. I had lots of paint left over so I started painting interior doors the same color to break up all the white trim. I also swapped out the gray painted mirror for a larger round mirror above the mantel, but that was later in July.

 

I took a break in April and didn’t make any home decorating changes. But in May, I turned my eye outside and we added our gravel patio by the pond, along with a new outdoor dining set.

 

And speaking of the garden pond, I added new plants and landscaping and it was looking like a mini-paradise in July! All the plants have faded now but I have some fun pond plans for winter!

 

In September I parted with my beloved script chairs in the sitting room (the cats were naughty and had clawed them a bit too much) and chose a pair of rattan beauties that the kitties can’t destroy.

 

The pair of rattan chairs have found a new home in the entryway, which I showed during my Christmas home tour earlier this month.

 

As for 2020, I have a list of what I’d like to do, but money and time will determine what is actually accomplished. Here’s my wish list:

• Paint the dining room board and batten a cream color
• Paint the adjoining sitting room a new color (to be determined)
• Paint the upstairs bathroom and get a new rug – preferably braided
• Get new flooring in the downstairs bathroom
• Refinish both claw foot tubs
• Add more trees and bushes to finish creating a natural fence around the yard (we started it earlier this year)
• I would love to paint the kitchen and possibly replace the open shelves. But I also want to replace the cabinets and counter tops and it’s probably best to do it all at once. So we’ll see.
